Chiefs fire Chan
Source: Chiefs chop Chan Gailey
Posted by Mike Florio on August 31, 2009 11:04 AM ET A source within the otherwise impenetrable walls of One Arrowhead Drive advises that the Chiefs have fired this morning offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. Gailey survived the initial purge of assistant coaches after Todd Haley was hired in February. It's unclear what has changed between then and now. More to come. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...p-chan-gailey/ |
That's very interesting. |
Huh? What?
|
Holy Shit!
|
Interesting. Gailey is a guy with some reputation, a former HC. Not sure I'd blame him for an offense that has a porous O-line, a subpar QB starting last season, and underperforming wideouts. I mean, even Picasso couldn't paint a masterpiece with a palette full of shit...
|
HOLY dogshit. This is highly unusual.
|
WOW!!!!
|
well, bye
|
They should fire the DC too.

Chan: "Hey, you know, I think Thigpen gives us the best chance to win in week one." Haley: "F**k you, clean out your desk." |
WOWZERS!
|
Good.
|
If true, I'm not a fan of this. I thought Gailey did pretty well last year in terms of matching a system to the talents of his players.
|
WTF? Is this for real?
|
Well now we have a built in excuse as to why these no talent scrubs on offense are going to suck, lackof talent and learning another new system aren't a good combo.

WTF?? He must have done something Haley didn't like. Maybe Haley told him to protect Cassel in the PS cause he knew the OL sucked, and Gailey got him hurt. That's really the only thing I can think of that would make them fire him at this juncture.
|
So, does this mean Haley will be calling the plays? Or are we going to try to bring in someone else this late?
This is an odd move. |
Wow, firing an assistant now is cold-blooded! I wonder who will call plays now? LOL

My guess is Haley wanted to call his own plays and Chan didn't want to give that up so Haley told him to hit the road.

Max protect everytime with bowe just going up for a jump ball

Who knows what went on behind the scenes. I think Haley will take over the playcalling as he should.

That is another strike. How many is that now?
|
Take it Haley's calling plays now?
|
Totally unexpected...I need more information before giving an opinion one way or another.
|
Big Balls in Cowtown. DAMN.
|
Haley to run the offense himself?
|
I bet Chan told Pioli he was an idiot for not getting some O-line.
|
Hit the road, chump!
|
Sending a message
|
Even if ya kinda liked Gailey, gotta admire another bold move by this regime.
Haley will do a great job calling it. |
I remember Haley saying something like "the running game was working, we got off track for some reason." Maybe that had something to do with it?
|
For a guy used to putting 20-30 points a game on the board, this offensive ineptitude finally pushed him over the edge. Maybe it was at the end of the second quarter Saturday where we had 2:30 in the half for a two minute drive, only to go 3 and out, punt it back on a short field and give up a TD. Maybe it's the inability to move the ball 1 freaking yard on 4 plays on the goal line. But the offense isn't working, so you keep trying to get better. That's players, and coaches. I'm looking forward to Haleyball, not Herm "Don't go Arena League on Me" Ball.
|
I hope Chan ends up talking.

Haley apparently wants to walk the tight wire this year without a net.
Hmmm. Maybe Gailey wanted to put some plays in for Thigpen. OTOH, maybe Haley was upset that Gailey didn't find a way to showcase Thigpen for trade bait last Saturday. Weird move. I hope Gailey leaks the scoop to someone so we find out what happened. |
Wow, why? This is pretty shocking news.
|
I guess Piolo and Haley didn't want him in their Super Duper Secret Club anymore.
|
People can say what they want about Chan, but the guy was able to create an entirely new scheme last year on the fly with Thigpen.

SCAPEGOAT comes to mind. |

What is the chance Pioli had another OC in mind before the firing?
|
Holy shit!

wtf? totally unexpected.
Chan's offense sucked at the beginning of last year too, but he got it back on track after Thigpen got the nod. Perhaps Chan couldn't do as much with the "pocket-passer" type QB as Haley wanted. |
This indicates a potential rift between Gailey and Pioli.
|
Wow. This season went to hell in a handbag after one weekend

This doesn't bode well for the stability of the team, IMO.

 If this is true, Haley is wanting results and won't stand for any mediocrity like this organizations has stood for during the Carl and Herm era. |
I don't know who this Haley guy you are all talking about is. the head coach is Mike Shanahan.
|
Maybe Chan told Haley that the o linemen we had on the roster would be fine/o.k. for the 2009 season.
PhilFree:arrow: |
Here's what I like about this.
*Haley could have let Chan hang around until the end of the season and then Fired him and used him as a scapegoat for our upcoming 3-13 season. Instead he took the bull by the horns and made the call right away. It may be to his ultimate detriment, but I respect the hell out of Haley for running this thing his way. |

Yup. That's my thought. Quote:

I think I remember reading that Pioli wanted Haley to keep Gailey, but he didn't really want to, and Pioli won that one. Now it becomes pretty clear that Haley had strong feelings about it. Very odd. My guess is that Gailey quit rather than give up play-calling duties.

it seems the opposite to me.
not having a complete training camp to work on the new offense held them back. having to install on short notice, learning on the fly, over simplified, etc. guess it doesn't really matter tho. we may well end up with the #1 draft pick next year. |
Maurice Carthon will be the O Coordinator this year.

dayton pioli
|
Sweet Jesus, where did this come from?
Why now? We're heading to Baltimore in 2 weeks! |
|
He's terrible. Good move. He was bad in Dallas. He was bad at Georgia Tech. The Chiefs have been no different. How this guy keeps getting these jobs is a mystery.
|
From Rotoworld:
"Chiefs coach Todd Haley admits that he doesn't have the personnel to be a "high-powered" offense right now. It didn't take long for Haley to realize he's sitting on one of the most talent-starved rosters in the league. He's been unhappy with his quarterbacks and receivers and plans to lean more heavily on the running game. We still think the Chiefs will pass quite a bit, but this is an offense to avoid in fantasy leagues." |
Wow, didn't see that coming.

IMO Chan was a pos anyway. Always a bridesmaid type of thing.
He was a loser as a HC and as a OC. Everyone liked him because he was "Creative." So was Hitler. |
