Chiefs fire Chan

Source: Chiefs chop Chan Gailey
Posted by Mike Florio on August 31, 2009 11:04 AM ET
A source within the otherwise impenetrable walls of One Arrowhead Drive advises that the Chiefs have fired this morning offensive coordinator Chan Gailey.

Gailey survived the initial purge of assistant coaches after Todd Haley was hired in February.

It's unclear what has changed between then and now.

More to come.

Archie Bunker 08-31-2009 09:12 AM

That's very interesting.

Rain Man 08-31-2009 09:12 AM

Huh? What?

doomy3 08-31-2009 09:13 AM

Holy Shit!

JD10367 08-31-2009 09:13 AM

Interesting. Gailey is a guy with some reputation, a former HC. Not sure I'd blame him for an offense that has a porous O-line, a subpar QB starting last season, and underperforming wideouts. I mean, even Picasso couldn't paint a masterpiece with a palette full of shit...

Hammock Parties 08-31-2009 09:13 AM

HOLY dogshit. This is highly unusual.

KC kid 08-31-2009 09:13 AM

WOW!!!!

Demonpenz 08-31-2009 09:13 AM

well, bye

Predarat 08-31-2009 09:14 AM

They should fire the DC too.

Maybe it went something like this.

Chan: "Hey, you know, I think Thigpen gives us the best chance to win in week one."

Haley: "F**k you, clean out your desk."

Easy 6 08-31-2009 09:14 AM

WOWZERS!

Brock 08-31-2009 09:14 AM

Good.

Rain Man 08-31-2009 09:14 AM

If true, I'm not a fan of this. I thought Gailey did pretty well last year in terms of matching a system to the talents of his players.

BigMeatballDave 08-31-2009 09:15 AM

WTF? Is this for real?

raybec 4 08-31-2009 09:15 AM

Well now we have a built in excuse as to why these no talent scrubs on offense are going to suck, lackof talent and learning another new system aren't a good combo.

This was my first thought.

beach tribe 08-31-2009 09:15 AM

WTF?? He must have done something Haley didn't like. Maybe Haley told him to protect Cassel in the PS cause he knew the OL sucked, and Gailey got him hurt. That's really the only thing I can think of that would make them fire him at this juncture.

doomy3 08-31-2009 09:16 AM

So, does this mean Haley will be calling the plays? Or are we going to try to bring in someone else this late?

This is an odd move.

CaliforniaChief 08-31-2009 09:16 AM

Wow, firing an assistant now is cold-blooded! I wonder who will call plays now? LOL

Bill Lundberg 08-31-2009 09:17 AM

My guess is Haley wanted to call his own plays and Chan didn't want to give that up so Haley told him to hit the road.

Hopefully Haley will be. I'm no fan of Gailey, so no biggie to me.

Demonpenz 08-31-2009 09:18 AM

Max protect everytime with bowe just going up for a jump ball

chiefforlife 08-31-2009 09:18 AM

Who knows what went on behind the scenes. I think Haley will take over the playcalling as he should.

Maybe Haley figured, with the weak economy, he could save ownership some money. Since it looks like the gameplan for the first few weeks will be, "Thigpen, Run For Your Life, on Two, Hut".

HemiEd 08-31-2009 09:18 AM

That is another strike. How many is that now?

Gonzo 08-31-2009 09:19 AM

Take it Haley's calling plays now?

alpha_omega 08-31-2009 09:20 AM

Totally unexpected...I need more information before giving an opinion one way or another.

MOhillbilly 08-31-2009 09:21 AM

Big Balls in Cowtown. DAMN.

wild1 08-31-2009 09:21 AM

Haley to run the offense himself?

Fat Elvis 08-31-2009 09:22 AM

I bet Chan told Pioli he was an idiot for not getting some O-line.

Simply Red 08-31-2009 09:22 AM

Hit the road, chump!

KC kid 08-31-2009 09:22 AM

Sending a message

Easy 6 08-31-2009 09:22 AM

Even if ya kinda liked Gailey, gotta admire another bold move by this regime.

Haley will do a great job calling it.

chiefforlife 08-31-2009 09:22 AM

I remember Haley saying something like "the running game was working, we got off track for some reason." Maybe that had something to do with it?

CaliforniaChief 08-31-2009 09:23 AM

For a guy used to putting 20-30 points a game on the board, this offensive ineptitude finally pushed him over the edge. Maybe it was at the end of the second quarter Saturday where we had 2:30 in the half for a two minute drive, only to go 3 and out, punt it back on a short field and give up a TD. Maybe it's the inability to move the ball 1 freaking yard on 4 plays on the goal line. But the offense isn't working, so you keep trying to get better. That's players, and coaches. I'm looking forward to Haleyball, not Herm "Don't go Arena League on Me" Ball.

Chiefnj2 08-31-2009 09:23 AM

I hope Chan ends up talking.

sorry, but CP requires your information right now.

patteeu 08-31-2009 09:23 AM

Haley apparently wants to walk the tight wire this year without a net.

Hmmm. Maybe Gailey wanted to put some plays in for Thigpen. OTOH, maybe Haley was upset that Gailey didn't find a way to showcase Thigpen for trade bait last Saturday.

Weird move. I hope Gailey leaks the scoop to someone so we find out what happened.

Priest31kc 08-31-2009 09:23 AM

Wow, why? This is pretty shocking news.

blaise 08-31-2009 09:24 AM

I guess Piolo and Haley didn't want him in their Super Duper Secret Club anymore.

Chiefnj2 08-31-2009 09:24 AM

People can say what they want about Chan, but the guy was able to create an entirely new scheme last year on the fly with Thigpen.

I tend to agree. made lemonade from lemons best he could.

SCAPEGOAT comes to mind.

probably got some rider in there he doesn't get paid if he talks. But, I would sure like to know how they were on the same page and now they are not. What happened? Getting the scapegoat set up early?

Chief Faithful 08-31-2009 09:26 AM

What is the chance Pioli had another OC in mind before the firing?

SCAPEGOAT comes to mind.

Scapegoat doesn't make that much sense though because no one cares about the preseason. By letting him go now, they've lost their potential scapegoat for a poor offensive regular season. It's on Haley now, more than ever.

sedated 08-31-2009 09:27 AM

wtf? totally unexpected.

Chan's offense sucked at the beginning of last year too, but he got it back on track after Thigpen got the nod.

Perhaps Chan couldn't do as much with the "pocket-passer" type QB as Haley wanted.

Hammock Parties 08-31-2009 09:27 AM

This indicates a potential rift between Gailey and Pioli.

ToxSocks 08-31-2009 09:27 AM

I don't. This is a stupid as firing Trey Hillman. Chan and Trey have been rendered totally irrelelavant. Sure Trey does some dumb things as I'm sure Chan does, but how the hell do you blame them when the organization sends them into a gun fight with a knife, on hand tied behind their back, and wearing a blindfold. You are only as good as your options. Neither coach has many. Firing them is window dressing at best. They aren't the problem. A lack of talent is..........this is stupid. Gailey has one of the best reputations as a offensive mind in the NFL.

Discuss Thrower 08-31-2009 09:27 AM

This doesn't bode well for the stability of the team, IMO.

Maybe, but if he whispers his story in a friendly reporter's ear, they wouldn't be able to prove it. Happens all the time.

If this is true, Haley is wanting results and won't stand for any mediocrity like this organizations has stood for during the Carl and Herm era.

wild1 08-31-2009 09:28 AM

I don't know who this Haley guy you are all talking about is. the head coach is Mike Shanahan.

philfree 08-31-2009 09:28 AM

Maybe Chan told Haley that the o linemen we had on the roster would be fine/o.k. for the 2009 season.

PhilFree:arrow:

Bill Lundberg 08-31-2009 09:29 AM

Here's what I like about this.

*Haley could have let Chan hang around until the end of the season and then Fired him and used him as a scapegoat for our upcoming 3-13 season. Instead he took the bull by the horns and made the call right away. It may be to his ultimate detriment, but I respect the hell out of Haley for running this thing his way.

I do like this too, though. :hmmm:

FringeNC 08-31-2009 09:30 AM

I think I remember reading that Pioli wanted Haley to keep Gailey, but he didn't really want to, and Pioli won that one. Now it becomes pretty clear that Haley had strong feelings about it. Very odd. My guess is that Gailey quit rather than give up play-calling duties.

GOOD!

sparkky 08-31-2009 09:30 AM

it seems the opposite to me.

not having a complete training camp to work on the new offense held them back. having to install on short notice, learning on the fly, over simplified, etc.

guess it doesn't really matter tho. we may well end up with the #1 draft pick next year.

Bill Lundberg 08-31-2009 09:31 AM

Maurice Carthon will be the O Coordinator this year.

Why now? We're heading to Baltimore in 2 weeks!

CaliforniaChief 08-31-2009 09:34 AM

Well kcchiefs.com has already scrubbed him.

Garcia Bronco 08-31-2009 09:34 AM

He's terrible. Good move. He was bad in Dallas. He was bad at Georgia Tech. The Chiefs have been no different. How this guy keeps getting these jobs is a mystery.

The Poz 08-31-2009 09:34 AM

From Rotoworld:
"Chiefs coach Todd Haley admits that he doesn't have the personnel to be a "high-powered" offense right now.
It didn't take long for Haley to realize he's sitting on one of the most talent-starved rosters in the league. He's been unhappy with his quarterbacks and receivers and plans to lean more heavily on the running game. We still think the Chiefs will pass quite a bit, but this is an offense to avoid in fantasy leagues."

He said he could win more than 2 games with 22 guys off the street, looks like he fully intends to do everything he can so he doesn't eat his words.Right or not, major respect for the guy,and I hope in the long run we one day look back and think ballsy move but it worked.

He was a loser as a HC and as a OC.
