What NFL Draft Busts suprised you the most?

I wanted this in the lounge so I could get more looks. Who were some sure fire college players you thought would be great who weren't?

Some that really suprised me:

Vernon Gholston; he was dang near unblockable his last year at O-State, when he was matched up against Jake Long he absolutely dominated him. I was really suprised to see how bad he did in the League.

Taylor Mays; I never cared for the kid, but I honestly thought he would be a baller and boy was I off.

Big Daddy Dan Wilkinson; He is one of the first players I watched that I could actually tell was dominating. At Ohio State he was unblockable, he fizzled out in Cinci (common theme), but he bounced around and never made himself a name.

There's plenty more, but that's enough for now.

El Jefe 03-20-2012 02:17 PM

I guess bust maybe more than I intended, this should include someone who didn't perform as well as you thought they would have.

Carson Palmer was another let down IMO.

El Jefe 03-20-2012 02:18 PM

AJ Hawk, I thought that kid would dominate in the league, he has done very well, but he had hardly the impact I thought he would.

loochy 03-20-2012 02:20 PM

Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III

WV 03-20-2012 02:22 PM

For a chiefs fan to start this thread you must be into self torture.

tyton75 03-20-2012 02:24 PM

I'll get flamed for this, but I'm going with Adrian Peterson. He was SO much better than everyone around him in college. While he has had a few years where he was awesome in the NFL, I was really expecting him to be the next Emmitt Smith who was great for a LONG time.

Bump 03-20-2012 02:24 PM

Ryan Leaf, that kid had such a fantastic arm

It's not like Peterson is out of the league or anything... The guy is still doing it....

Well that's just unrealistic in today's NFL. The position just takes too much of a beating. Particular for a power back. AP has been great.

Emmitt Smith's record might not ever be broken.

Not flaming you, but just imagine AP running behind the lines that Emmitt did. Yes Emmitt was great, but i don't even think he was the best back of his time.

Good call. I remember being very unhappy when we was drafted by the Fade. But (as with most players our friends from Iowa endlessly talk up) the reality was far different than the hype.

blaise 03-20-2012 02:34 PM

Vince Young. I didn't think he'd be a hall of famer, but I thought he'd have an 8-10 year career where he kept them competitive for a while. I didn't expect him to be that soft mentally.

Sofa King 03-20-2012 02:35 PM

Dwayne Jarrett's lack of anything at all was quite shocking.

I thought he'd at least be a possession receiver.

suds79 03-20-2012 02:35 PM

I remember thinking Ron Dayne was the man and I also liked Dwayne Jarrett.

I'm happy to report those are from a while ago.

I don't know. Something more recent? I suppose even though he's okay, I expected so much more from Glenn Dorsey considering the hype on him coming out.

DJ's left nut 03-20-2012 02:40 PM

Both Irish QBs - Clausen and Quinn.

I figured both guys would end up in that 10-15 range as good, but not great QBs. Essentially Matt Schaub.

As it turns out, they both suck badly enough to be considered as 'competition' for Cassel.

cardken 03-20-2012 02:41 PM

Emmitt Smith played behind an Offensive Line Pro Bowl team. While he had skills, put him on a team with an average Offensive Line, he is good but no where near as good as he was with Dallas.
Walter Payton/ Gayle Sayers/ Barry Sanders true "greats" at that position, with and without the lines in their careers, they always were productive, ....athletes.

suds79 03-20-2012 02:41 PM

Oh how could I forget. I wanted the Chiefs to snag Brady Quinn and finally end their lack of QB issues.

Looks like I'm finally getting my wish. :P

Bump 03-20-2012 02:41 PM

But a few others come to mind

WR Michael Westbrook - this guy was pure talent and I thought he'd be awesome
RB Rashaan Salaam - I thought he was gonna be a badass
QB Brian Griese - admit it, we were all pissed off thinking about what we thought he was gonna do to us
Steve Emtman - that astro turf ****ed him up

jjchieffan 03-20-2012 02:42 PM

Brady Quinn. He seemed to be a great QB coming out. Hopefully he is a late bloomer and becomes a perennial pro bowler in KC. Doubtful, but what other hope do we have this year Not Matt Cassel, and if Ricky Stanzi couldn't beat out Tyler, turnovers on 3 straight plays, Palko, what hope is there in him?

TRR 03-20-2012 02:44 PM

So many QB's busting out surprise me. Is it that they don't have the tools or are teams just not patient enough with them?

Joey Harrington
Akili Smith
David Carr
Brady Quinn
Ryan Leaf
Jamarcus Russel
Matt Leinart

Just to name a few...and many more to come.

Either that or he sucks.

Rain Man 03-20-2012 02:46 PM

I thought Wendell Bryant would be the best of the four DTs taken in the 1st round that year, and that Albert Haynesworth would be the worst. I had ranked them as...

1. Wendell Bryant
2. John Henderson (might have put him #1 but I recall an injury risk being discussed)
3. Ryan Sims
4. Albert Haynesworth (thought he was going to be lazy, which he was, but only later on)

I also figured that Alan Branch was a can't miss at DT. While I think he's still in the league, he's obviously a can miss.

I will forever claim it's unfair to keep mentioning Sylvester Morris a bust. Guy can't help it that his knee got blown out. shit happens.

He looked good before that.

Why the hell did you think Tyson Jackson, Victor Riley, Trazelle Jenkins, Greg Hill, Paul Palmer or Ethan Horton would be any good?

You're just listing busts that most of us knew would be busts. That doesn't count.

I call bullshit on Ryan Sims. He was pretty much the consensus #1 ranked DT. I dare anyone to provide a post saying he was going to bust before his first season.

Leinart and maybe Quinn were the only ones of that list that surprised me. Akili Smith was dumb as a stump, Harrington was basically Gannon and Leaf was a major headcase that was obvious to anyone paying attention. Carr and Russel never really screamed "franchise QB" coming out.

Mi_chief_fan 03-20-2012 03:06 PM

TheGuardian 03-20-2012 03:45 PM

Honestly, none.

There has never been a guy that I just KNEW was going to be awesome that busted. Most of the guys listed in here I said I thought would suck.

The closest I would get to that would be Gholston. Probably because he was a great pass rusher, damn near unblockable as a senior against NFL level talent, and somehow it never transferred into the pros. It's just pass rushing! And he had a great work ethic so I thought he had a great shot, but certainly wasn't beating down doors for him.

My opinion on guys like Akili Smith and Cade McNown and Ron Dayne and pretty much every big bust has been spot on.

Robert Gallery had alligator arms. I knew he'd suck nuts as a left tackle. You can't play left tackle with ****ing 1 foot long arms. That one was easy. I was shocked at how much people thought of him.

I've been racking my brain trying to think of someone, but every guy I've ever thought would bust did. My opinion is that RGIII will be a bust too. It's hard for me to believe how many people here are on his nuts.

Getting carried by a defense to those games has no bearing on his play. They have won mostly in spite of him. JFC get real.

He's clearly the weak link on that team and that's not a good thing when it's the QB holding you back. Drafted to be a "Franchise QB" and those guys are supposed to raise the play of thier teammates.
