Geno Smith with Chip Kelly calling plays. CP's wet dream in 2012.

Possibly. But this is the Raiders we're talking about. They'll find some way to **** it all up and fire half the coaching staff 5 games into the season.

probably better than giving Sam Darnold a $30-40m contract, which some team is probably going to do

I have to say "**** Geno Smith."

I'll do it. It's just going to take me some time, that's all.

For now, let me pretend he's not on the Raiders. At least until the end of the offseason.

No one here will want to admit this until it becomes a statistical reality, but the Raiders could easily steal the AFC West next season if the Chiefs **** up the LT situation again.

This is quite reminiscent of the Chiefs bringing in Steve DeBerg or Trent Green.

The AFC West just got a lot tighter.

well they've certainly had enough top 10 picks over the past several years to accumulate some talent. It's not the worst move they could have done tbh.

If they draft Jeanty and get one more WR they could compete

The Raiders basically split with the Chiefs last season.

Smith is one of the most accurate QBs in football.

This moved the needle. Significantly.

Geno is 27-22 the last three seasons, with mostly terrible defense behind him in Seattle.

We're not beating him 19-17.

Hell, taking a shot and drafting a QB instead of another recycled reject hand me down from another team was what I wanted.

I also wanted Aaron Rodgers in 2005 the year we took Derrick Johnson who turned out to be pretty darn good.

Going from flirtations with Stafford at Tom Brady’s ski lodge… to Geno Smith… is quite a drop.

Why Not? 03-07-2025 07:55 PM

People citing this as some sort of "oh shit, here come the Raiders" are hilarious. Here's what that move did:

The Raiders went from having undeniably the worst QB in the division last year to having....arguably the worst QB in the division this year.

The Raiders will probably win a couple more games than they did last year....and still finish last in the division.

I'll give them credit now, though. They have done what so many NFL teams, past and present, refuse to do. Which is to look at their WC round ceiling QB and to have the following internal conversation:

"Is our QB good enough to win a Super Bowl?"

It's not a bad move for The Raiders.

You have to remember-their coach is in his 70's.

Giving up a 3rd for decent QB play short-term isn't bad at all.

FloridaMan88 03-07-2025 08:37 PM

Even in a full rebuild, would they really trade away a 24 year old LT?

Link: https://atozsports.com/nfl/kansas-ci...charles-cross/

Quote:

Raiders' blockbuster trade for Geno Smith opens up the path for rival Chiefs to secure their left tackle of the future

The Las Vegas Raiders' blockbuster deal to acquire Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith might have just helped the Kansas City Chiefs find their left tackle of the future.

All signs point toward a major overhaul in Seattle this offseason. They've reversed course on Smith, said goodbye to veteran WR Tyler Lockett, and are entertaining trade inquiries on star WR DK Metcalf. It all begs the question, who else could be available in trade?

The Chiefs need to find a long-term solution for the left tackle position. It's not a secret, but it's also apparent that they lack many viable options via free agency. It just so happens that Seahawks LT Charles Cross is entering the final year of his rookie deal. But could he possibly be available? At the right price, anyone is available in the NFL.

It would make a lot of sense for Seattle to shop Cross. He'll command a top-of-market contract extension in 2026, and your organization no longer has a franchise quarterback. He might also simply not want to play for a team without one.

notorious 03-07-2025 08:42 PM

It would be epically reeruned for Seattle to give up a good LT just because they are reloading.

That is a HUGE piece of a rebuild they already have. Why in the hell would they let him walk?

Stupid.

(Also, on what planet is a trade for Geno Smith blockbuster?!)

Bridge QB. Raiders will still draft a QB this year or next. Geno and Darnold the only OK QBs available so.....meh. I dont think Carroll is a dummy but I'll wait and see

Well, it would appear that they will be in position to draft one. And it would appear that they're stockpiling picks. Do they want to start the clock on a LT, or do they want to pay Cross top of the market?

I thought this idea was the dumbest thing anyone had come up with...until they shipped Geno out. Now I'm not so sure. Looks like a firesale.

No, I don't think he's a dummy, and I think he wanted a guy he was comfortable with.

He's only going to coach a few more years, tops. He's thinking very short term.

He's a legit NFL QB. That's more than half of the teams have, in my opinion. That qualifies. I'd take Geno before I'd pay Darnold $40m.

And I'm not so sure on Cross now. If they want to start a new clock on paying a LT, they'll be in position to draft one next year for sure. This looks like a tank job.

Not a bad play really.

Andy Reid came to the Chiefs then traded away two 2nd round picks for Smith and turned the team around. Pete might be able to pull off the same stunt.

The Raiders now have a stable coach, OC, and QB play. They're really going to have to beef up the rest of the team if they want any chance at the AFC WEST.

They have cap space and draft picks to accomplish that goal. They really haven't made a questionable move yet.

What worked out was when the team did exactly what the Seahawks are at least trying to do, find a QB that can actually win a championship. And I like Alex. But he was what he was. If you wanna look at Chiefs history trying to win a SB with a mid QB, spoiler alert, there ain’t much to see, good results wise.
