Lance Mackey RIP
I doubt this will get much notice outside this great state but Lance Mackey, one of the great dog mushers, died last night.
https://www.adn.com/outdoors-adventu...ied-at-age-52/ Here is a profile of him from Outside magazine from several years ago: https://www.outsideonline.com/outdoo...ghest-athlete/ He was the first to win the Yukon Quest and the Iditarod in the same year, 2007, which earned him a nomination for an ESPY. For decades it was just known that was impossible. For those who don't know, the Quest is tougher than Iditarod. Going between Whitehorse, Yukon, and Fairbanks, Alaska, in early February, the race is colder, darker and more desolate than its more famous cousin Iditarod. Down-to-earth, hard-working, tough as tanned walrus hide, Mackey was a true Alaskan. RIP, Lance. Iditarod will not be the same without you. |
Wonder if Jim Rome did a piece on him today?
RIP |
Great man, but honestly had nothing on Yukon Cornelius
RIP |
Lance Mackey and the Queen in one day? Worst day ever (outside of the 2018 AFCCG, 2020 SB, and 2021 AFCCG, 2014 World Series and any other Chiefs or Royals playoff losses).

He picked a bad day to die.

RIP Old guy i've never heard of!

He was only 52? Another athlete dying young.

“ Alaska, where any wintertime temperature above minus 20 degrees, Mackey told me, is tropical.”
Badass. Alaska isn’t for pussies |
