If MS doesn't do away with that online check or at least extend it to once a month type deal, I'll be surprised. The outrage over it is too high and it, among other things, is pushing people that are more Xbox (like myself) away from them.
I'm actually thinking I might grab a PS3 after the new consoles come out if the price drops. There are quite a few games I'd love to play.

In 2014 most of the popular PS3 games will be available on the PS4's cloud service for download if that means anything to you.
And after listening to Microsoft it seems like they are extremely committed to this always online thing.

“It’s a service-based world, if you think about things and how they get better with an internet connection, that’s a design choice we’ve made. I think people will appreciate it... We did a lot of testing, a lot of consumer research and I think we made a good choice.”
Mattrick said Microsoft appreciates the passion of gamers but he believes gamers are “imagining outcomes that are worse than what we believe it’s going to be in the real world.”

Of course, these comments were made prior to E3 so they might reconsider after what Sony did. Or maybe they are just unbelievably arrogant and think that consumers will stick with them no matter what.
