I'm not wild over Sanchez, but Kiper probably knows more than I do. IMO, you take BPA in the top 5, if not top 10. I think DE is our biggest need, but that would be a huge reach at #3 overall, and can probably be addressed in Rd 2.

1.Detroit Matthew Stafford QB Georgia
2 St. Louis Andre Smith OT Alabama
3 Kansas City Mark Sanchez QB USC
4 Seattle Michael Crabtree WR Texas Tech
5 Cleveland Aaron Curry LB Wake Forest
6 Cincinnati Jason Smith OT Baylor
7 Oakland Jeremy Maclin WR Missouri
8 Jacksonville Eugene Monroe OT Virginia
9 Green Bay Malcolm Jenkins CB Ohio St.
10 San Francisco Aaron Maybin DE/OLB Penn St.
11 Buffalo Brandon Pettigrew TE Oklahoma St.
12 Denver B.J. Raji DT Boston College
13 Washington Brian Orakpo DE Texas
14 New Orleans Vontae Davis CB Illinois
15 Houston Everette Brown DE Florida St.
16 San Diego Knowshon Moreno RB Georgia

If Kiper knew more than you, he'd probably be a GM by now. But he's not. So go ahead and criticize all you want. I'm not a fan of Sanchez at all.

If BJ Raji continues to impress, he'll go much higher than 12, maybe in the top 3.

Chris Long and Raji could go a long way in Spagnoulo's defense.

Rams could have a solid front line with Carriker and Clifton Ryan as well.

Personally, I am for trading up with the Lions for the #1 overall spot this year to make sure we get the best QB.

Since the Lions alread have a later first round pick, maybe our 2nd rounder would be enough to get the deal done. It would get the Lions off of the big bucks for the #1 overall, and give them 4 overall picks out of the first 34 selections.

I think he might have done that himself, cause I can read your "pissed." And I find it really amusing when people say "cuss" instead of curse. There was this whiny kid at Walmart who was arguing with someone on the phone and got mad when the caller started "cussing" at him. He slammed the phone down and was crying like a little bitch. This is all I can think of when people say "cuss."

Unless you just want to be cheap like the Vikings were a few years ago and "accidentally" let your time expire so you drop a slot and have to pay your first round pick less money.

Sanchez is way too risky to pick with #3. Dude had a disappointing season by almost all accounts until he cut loose in the Rose Bowl. That's not enough to warrant such a high pick.

I thought the Josh Freeman to T-Bay in the middle of the first round was comical. How many picks does he have to throw before people wake up and see this guy for what he is? Looks like Tarzan, throws like Jane without her glasses.

Only on Chiefsplanet could Mark Sanchez losing 1 game, and having a 34-10 TD-INT number be considered a disappointing season..I swear some people say the dumbest things.

Also I'm sorry Big 12 homerism the Chiefs should not in any way be considering Michael Crabtree.

Michael Crabtree is Dwayne Bowe with slightly better hands.....

That's why this team shouldn't be looking at him, if he was the elite Fitzgerald or Andre Johnson or Calvin Johnson level ok different situation then.

I should probably throw Moss up there since he was really the platinum ultimate standard for grading a WR on talent, his character concerns dropped him but his pick likely goes down as one of the biggest steals in modern draft history..every single team that passed on him should kick themselves to this day.

I agree with you on the Crabtree assessment. IMO Maclin would be a much better compliment to Bowe than Crabtree. I am in now way, shape or form suggesting drafting Maclin with our pick, but feel his speed would be a better fit than Crabtree.

I am not big on Sanchez or Stafford. Of the two, I like Stafford better and if QB is the route Pioli goes I trust his judgment until he starts reminding me of Carl(likely never).

I'm fine with Sanchez if he impresses at the combine and the Chiefs sign some offensive linemen in free agency.

Like who? Have you looked at the eligible free agents? I'd say there are two guys the Chiefs might target and both are guards, Jahri Evans and Jason Brown.

There is no long term solution at right tackle or center. They'll need to come from the draft.

Stafford looks legit, but I get the feeling some people want a quarterback just for the sake of drafting a quarterback. I agree with Pete Carroll that Sanchez shouldn't have come out yet.

Yeah, because you watched him progress for four years at USC?

I'd wager that you've seen him play in ONE game, tops.

FWIW, I talked to a pretty powerful booster at a party last night who told me that Carroll is pissed because he wanted the National Championship this year and none of his QB's are even close to being as good as Sanchez. Especially since they're losing so many defensive players.

Sanchez is way too risky to pick with #3. Dude had a disappointing season by almost all accounts until he cut loose in the Rose Bowl. That's not enough to warrant such a high pick.

I choose to believe Pete Carroll when he says Sanchez doesn't have enough experience. I think USC loses too many key defensive players to win a national title next year, even if Sanchez had returned. If Carroll is nervous about having a new starting QB next year, than every coach in America who has a new starting QB should be terribly frightened.

The way it was setup at SC was for most of the defense to leave and be young next year while the offense returning all but 1 starter who wasn't a huge deal anyway in Patrick Turner would carry the team..

With Sanchez leaving that all changes because now you have to break in another QB and frankly Barkley isn't going to play and the other 2 guys weren't great shakes heading into this past season...

Sanchez is without a doubt a top 10 pick, Carroll has told players to leave sure he had a player to replace them, Sanchez declaring for himself which is what he did, he made the best decision for his own personal interest. Carroll is upset because even as a SC fan I know this Mark Sanchez is basically the difference in USC maybe being national champion next year and having the first season without 11 wins in 8 years....

1.Detroit Matthew Stafford QB Georgia
2 St. Louis Andre Smith OT Alabama
3 Kansas City Mark Sanchez QB USC
4 Seattle Michael Crabtree WR Texas Tech
5 Cleveland Aaron Curry LB Wake Forest
6 Cincinnati Jason Smith OT Baylor
7 Oakland Jeremy Maclin WR Missouri
8 Jacksonville Eugene Monroe OT Virginia
9 Green Bay Malcolm Jenkins CB Ohio St.
10 San Francisco Aaron Maybin DE/OLB Penn St.

12 Denver B.J. Raji DT Boston College
13 Washington Brian Orakpo DE Texas
14 New Orleans Vontae Davis CB Illinois
15 Houston Everette Brown DE Florida St.
16 San Diego Knowshon Moreno RB Georgia

I'm going to be curious to see what Crabtree runs at the combine. Some of the CP folks seem to see him as a step below A. and C. Johnson or L. Fitzgerald as prospects and I just don't see it. Crabtree is right alongside those 3 as elite level WR prospects, IMO. Big, fast and strong, he catches the ball with his hands and is an above average route runner (he's not Holt or Harrison, but he still does better than most). He's a good jumper and has room on his frame for a little more weight without slowing down.

If he runs a 4.30-4.40 I think you consider him with those guys. CJ would be a little bigger than the other three, Fitzgerald would be the slowest, but all of them project as similar weapons.

I don't understand why folks are understating Crabtree's ability, he can absolutely put him self in the elite class of NFL WRs.

Offenses matter much less for WRs than for QBs, IMO.

Speed, strength, size, leaping ability and proper catching technique will translate regardless of the offense. He's shown things like toughness and a gamer's spirit that will also translate. With QBs, you never know how they'll adapt as triggermen. With WRs, nearly everything they do in the spread can be dissected and applied equally to a conventional offense. The things that made him effective in a spread will make him equally effective in a pro offense.

There will be the same rookie adjustment that nearly all WRs have to make (including those cited in this thread), but he'll be a great one shortly thereafter, IMO.

His stats aren't worth getting worked up over, but his ability is.

Uh, I've been stating since April 2008 that the Chiefs need a center, right guard and right tackle to even have a chance to compete.

The Chiefs will need to find these guys in the DRAFT, not through free agency. There are only two guys that could possibly fill a long term need. Who the fuck said anything about USC fans? This isn't some type of "Let's draft Chase Daniel" bullshit, Sanchez is a legitimate Top 5 prospect.

I couldn't give a fuck where a guy played his ball. If he's the best prospect at the given spot, draft him.

ESPECIALLY if you think he's a Franchise Quarterback.

I don't see why people assume it's beyond the realm of possibility for the Chiefs to draft an O-Lineman. Really, it hinges on what they think of Sanchez. For arguments sake, let's say they don't like Sanchez and Stafford is off the board. Who do you think they're going to draft?

I guess I'm just saying that people act like it's so outlandish that they would have two first round picks on the O-line. If they don't like Sanchez, they already have a first round WR, a first round LB, a first round RB, and two first round D-Linemen on the roster. So if people believe you can't have two first rounders on a given unit they're basically saying the Chiefs have to take a defensive back? If they like Sanchez, great, go ahead. I'm not a scout, so I can't pretend to know if he's NFL Franchise QB material. But if the Chiefs don't like him I think an O-tackle is a real possibility.

I just want to back up the people for Sanchez. If you watch him play, it's clear that he has better NFL tools than Stafford. I have seen Stafford play with bad footwork too much, which Sanchez steps into his throws. I could care less that he played on USC, he is a quality player with an NFL arm. Carroll's comments are sour grapes, i think.

I know people were screaming for Sanchez to start over John David Booty, so it's not like he surprised anyone this season with his play. He dominated Penn State in the Rose Bowl, and played well in the rest of his games, too. For some reason, we didn't hear much about USC this season, but Sanchez was phenomenal and deserves to be a high pick in this draft.

Raji dominated all week in practice, which is the most important part of the week. His stock has gone way up.

Everette Brown and Aaron Maybin are the top two 3-4 edge rushers, and depending on need they could go high.

I'm certainly not advocating any of these three for our #3 pick, but the question was who would Pioli possibly target if he didn't want a QB. Aaron Curry is a perfect fit in a 4-3 scheme, but he'd be kind of a waste in a 3-4.

Tackle seems to be pretty highly targeted again in mock drafts this year. I wonder if Jacksonville isn't an actual trade down possibility for us, especially if the Lions and Rams both take tackles. Seattle and Oakland are ahead of Jax and may be inclined to take tackles, which may result in Jacksonville trading up.

He had a whopping 8 picks in almost 400 attempts this year. His INT have gone down in each of his 3 years. Clearly a sign of a player that hasn't improved at all.

As far as I know this is the only thread I've brought it up in. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think so.
I never said the Chiefs should look to take a tackle as a first option, just that it may be the best route depending who's on the board. If Stafford's gone (which he probably will be) there's Sanchez (who I already said the Chiefs should take if they like him). My point is if both those guy's are gone, or if the Chiefs just really don't like Sanchez and you can't trade down, an O-lineman isn't that bad a thing. (There's two tackle positions on O-line by the way).
What, are you going to draft Crabtree or Maclin and have two first round WRs? Are you going to draft another first round D-lineman?
It's a reasonable question, you're the one behaving like a petulant jerk. If you don't want to answer, don't. But speak like a freaking person, and not some total dick.

1200 points is a LOT to make up in value.

Jacksonville is probably a good target, but regardless of team, there just isn't that elite talent at the top of this draft worthy of a team giving up the multiple picks it would take, much less the huge difference in contact terms.

You're looking at about a $10M difference in guaranteed money between the 3rd pick and the 8th pick.

Plus giving up at MINIMUM a 2nd round pick this year and a 1st next year. Likely more.

I've seen Sanchez several times, and I'd take him if Pioli can improve the offensive line. I'd say the same thing about Stafford.

I'm not sure how many more times it has to be said:

Dane is not a USC fan.

Thank you for clarifying.

FWIW, If I were a USC fan, I'd have to move into another house because my wife is a UCLA grad.

Seriously.

She had co-worker that was a USC grad and they used to pull pranks on each other constantly. Removing license plate covers from each school and replacing them with their respective alma maters, replacing coffee mugs in the breakroom, etc. and so on. Her USC associates and friends dog her every year before, during and after "The Game".

It would be hell.

Besides that, I'm a Big 12 guy at heart.

Cause he'll get killed without having the line in place, right? I'm frankly surprised that any NFL team ever drafts a QB. Must be monster lines all over the place.

USC usually has very solid O-line play, so that's probably why Dane is such a fucking Trojan homer.

For Mecca, it's a long hair thing.

The people who have issue with Sanchez are the people who frankly don't ever want to pick a QB, or they hate USC, one or the other.

I think some USC players are overrated, but I don't have anything against the school. I'd pick a QB if the right QB were available, but I'm not enthusiastic about using a top 3 pick on a kid who started less than 20 games. History says he's going to fail. I'd be okay with Stafford.

You seem very confused by the fact that I'm actually informed about USC. I know a lot about UCLA as well, but unfortunately, they're a bad team so they're not really worth discussing. We all know that the Chiefs have a lot of holes. A lot. Almost every single area needs to be upgraded.

That said, there is only one position that can be "fixed" with a single pick. Nice for us that it's the most important position and that there are two elite prospects in this draft.

Unless something screwy happens and they go 1-2, we need to take the risk.

All great teams need two All Pro left tackles to succeed.

The QB can be found on the bench or free agency.

I think the only things that would force major changes are the things that we won't hear about - team interviews with prospects and physicals.

Barring an awful performance in the combine, I don't think the combine events alter the draft board all that much.

I've never really understood why players rise or drop so much based on combine times. For instance, right now a draft "expert" will have an estimated time for a LB of a 4.75 and have him ranked as a mid 2nd round pick. If the guy runs a 4.60 at the combine he'll move to the first round. In reality nothing really changed. The guy played college ball with the same attributes he has now. The only thing that changed was the "guru's" estimation was wrong.

I get what you're saying, but I think teams get infatuated with combine numbers because they focus more on potential than what has happened in the past.

For instance, in your example, some NFL teams may see that LB run .15 seconds faster in the 40 than expected and think he could become a beast if they just teach him better technique. You can't teach speed, and if you've got a guy that is big and runs like a gazelle, many NFL coaches may feel they have the ability to coach him up to make better use out of that physical ability.

For the player that was a great producer in college and has just so-so measurables, it's hard to get excited because what you see is what you will get. But the guy that oozes athleticism and hasn't quite put it all together on the field yet makes coaches dream about what could be.

You can teach speed. That's why all of the prospects are training right now with track coaches teaching them to run fast on a track in a non-football environment.

Exactly. When the season ended all of a sudden the draft boards of the "experts" changed. They talked with actual scouts who told them X, Y, Z. That's why Curry suddenly became a consensus top 3 best available player.

Last year Brohm was a top 10 QB during the season. As soon as the season ended he miraculously dropped like a stone. That's because the real scouts turned in their reports and word spread.

Between now and the draft the teams will all be tight lipped and the only changes are going to come about from: (a) draft guys trying to generate talk by mixing things up and being controversial, and (b) people blowing workouts out of proportion. Every year you have dozens of "lets draft Olaf Olegson for the line. The dude did 38 reps on the bench press. He's a monster."

I gave you a list of free agent offensive linemen which you chose to crap all over. Given the Chiefs' salary cap space and Pioli's tendency to want linemen, it seems fair to think he will address that area. Again, I'm advocating helping Sanchez. You shouldn't be upset.

I'm not "upset".

It's just that I and other people (Pestilance, OTW58, Mecca, ChiefsCountry, etc.) put a lot of time and effort into discussing not only possible scenarios but why and how they could and/or should work.

Coming into the forum stating "Hey, I think we'll sign a bunch of free-agents and draft Sanchez" without any explanation of who and why the Chiefs would sign these free agents kind of dampens the spirit of this sub-forum.

About the bold part: That's what I'm doing, and I'm on the side of drafting Sanchez. I want to give him some help before he comes here. I don't know everything about the free agents, but nobody here does. Given the Chiefs salary cap space, I don't see why they wouldn't sign one starter for offensive line. They could also draft one in the second to fourth rounds. I'm trying to be optimistic, and my points are reasonable. I want Sanchez to be successful here from day one.
