In the last 20 years...
Looking at things from 1991 through 2010... I heard Mike & Mike talking about this today. Comparing QBs drafted #1 and how they're really about 50/50 on whether or not they have proven to be worth the selection over the last 20 seasons.
Then, comparing that list to the list of starting QBs on SB winning teams in the same 20 year period. I think there have been something like 11 QBs selected #1 overall in this timeframe... and 5 of them have been on SB winning teams. Guys like Stafford and Bradford are early in their careers. 14 different QBs have won a SuperBowl. Rypien (round 6) Aikman (3X, round 1P1) Young (round 1P1) Favre (round 2) Elway (2X, round 1P1) Warner (UDFA) Dilfer (round 1P6) Brady (3, round 6) B Johnson (round 9) Roethlisberger (2X, round 1P11) P Manning (round 1P1) E Manning (round 1P1) Brees (round 2) Rodgers (round 1P24) Just found it interesting and thought I would throw it out there... |
someone should show this list to the true fans here in KC, and see if they can pick out a common theme among that list.....

1st, 2nd, 6th, and UDFA's are ok. |
Unfortunately, True Fans can only see that Tom Brady and Kurt Warner won Superbowls.

Two of the 20 are Mannings. Theme, Draft more Mannings. |
Rypien (round 6)
Aikman (3X, round 1P1) Young (round 1P1) Favre (round 2) - I think he was only a pick or two away from the first; traded for a first Elway (2X, round 1P1) Warner (UDFA) - Million to 1 shot Dilfer (round 1P6) - Brady (3, round 6) Eleventy million to 1 shot B Johnson (round 9) - All world Defense Roethlisberger (2X, round 1P11) P Manning (round 1P1) E Manning (round 1P1) Brees (round 2) - Only a pick or 2 away from the 1st. Rodgers (round 1P24) So, basically our Front office is banking on the Million+ to 1 shots. |

How can you have 22 #1 picks overall in 20 years...I must be missing something...
|
But if your team never starts rookie QBs ever the point is kind of moot.

2nd and 3rd-round picks are valuable enough and the law of averages are clear enough that teams just aren't going to pick QBs much in the middle rounds anymore. |
Bascially it tells me we wont win a Super bowl with Orton, Cassel or Stanzi...
I am sure this will still come as a surprise to some of the true fan nbreds here... |
to me it shows what round a QB was drafted in isn't that big of a deal.
Brady has as many Super Bowl wins as Troy Aikman who was drafted first overall in 89. Warner was better than Dilfer and he wasn't even drafted. |

not sure if srs.. |

There needs to be so much team chemistry, that it is a crapshoot to know which QB will gel with which group of players and which coaches.

The only thing these numbers show is that your odds of winning a super bowl are higher if you draft a 1st round qb than in any other round.

I want to draft a QB, but what i said is still true.
|
It shows me that unless you pick 1st overall your chances decrease significantly.

not against taking a QB in round one but
i'd take Brady over every QB on this list and he wasnt a 1st rounder |

Failing means you at least tried.. Taking the safe road all the time ='s mediocrity. You have to lose sight of 9-7 and take a chance at building a super bowl franchise... |

We have missed for 40 straight ****ing years... Whats the difference? |

I feel that to have a competent, franchise qb, you need to draft a qb in round 1 or 2 every 2/3 years. I feel if you hit on one, you can always trade the rest for similar compensation. And if you don't hit and only get a serviceable qb you can use him until you groom the next one and then keep them as back up or trade him for good value.
Just my 2 cents. Posted via Mobile Device |

And with the current rookie pay scale taking a QB in first round is less of a cap burden than in the past. Also, you can go down every position on an NFL team and find a high number of early first round busts. So should that preclude an NFL team from ever taking a player at that position early in the draft again? |
Guys, we don't need a franchise QB now.
We have a retread that beat the Packers, so we're all good. |

I don't care if the guy is even a 1st rounder.I just want KC to do their homework and draft a guy to build around with actual intentions of using him as a real life NFL QB vs just drafting this numb nuts mother****er over here because you're just supposed to draft one. |

if we had a chance to get a qb thats considered a cant miss player like Luck then yes. |

Then go look at the total # of QBs drafted in any other round during the same time frame and calculate those percentages. I dare you. |

They also talked about how Indy may have really screwed up by winning last week, especially if they find another win and match the Rams with 2 wins.
There's a scenario that puts the Rams at the #1 overall pick and with Bradford... they could command a HUGE bounty, someone was talking about 3 R1 picks and a couple of R2 picks... or even 4 R1 picks. It's crazy talk, especially with the 50/50 success rate by going QB #1 overall. I think Luck can be the next great QBotF... but is anyone really wild about their team trading that large of a bounty in order to get him? |

Would I trade Baldwin, Berry and Jackson for Luck? Yeah. Would I trade Berry, Jackson, Dorsey? Yes. Would I trade Jackson, Dorsey and Bowe? Yes. Dorsey, Bowe, Hali? tougher, but maybe. Bowe, Hali and DJ? No. |
