I don't think the total amount is the hangup. I think the guarantee is the issue. He was performing well and winning when he got Kaepernick'd. His contract was low enough that they could have kept him (8M) and Kaepernick (1M) and there'd be nothing he could do about it. Thankfully, for him, the Niners traded him to a team not named Cleveland or Oakland. I don't think Smith wants to be at the mercy of the team again. A contract that says to pay him as starter or release him, IMO.

If they are offering a guarantee that is for 2-3 years worth, he absolutely should not sign. Go and earn a new contract. Chances are that contract is at least 2-3 years AFTER this year. Total money does not matter, guarantee and signing bonus matters.

Too much and it hurts his team that could help him succeed and keep his job. Too little and he's too expendable. It doesn't matter if the Chiefs paid him a lot this year and next, it helps him little. He needs years 4-6 to be sufficient.
