It was the 80's and my ship had just conducted its last underway replenishment of our WESTPAC tour. We were headed back to San Diego via the Philippines and Hawaii, and the ship had been halfway around the world off the coast of Libya for a while. So we were finally going back home. Anyway, after a ship is replenished with supplies you break all ties and resume normal steaming, then you "break away" by turning away from the supply ship and continuing on. At this point you play a song over the 1MC (loudspeakers) and we usually went with
Fanfare For The Common Man by the Captain's command. He wanted something special and told the bridge to surprise him. We were scrambling around and I found a cassette tape stashed in a box, so I wound it to
Don't Look Back and we played it as our last break away song.
