They got a year's advance on a compensation pick for a dude that wasn't going to willingly sign with the team barring some ginormous payday by the Hunt family.

Not ideal that they put themselves into this position and it defintely hampered getting the best possible reward in a trade, but beyond that there's not a lot that can be done now.
