McGwire hit 49 HRs as a rookie in 1987. A record at the time. OPS .987. ROY.
That was Bond’s second year. OPS 0.821.
If we’re going to assume that both came into the league and their first 3 years were pure as white snow, Bonds definitely was not clearly the better player.
What we can comfortably say is that Bonds was the best player ever on PEDs. Better than McGwire and Sosa. Better than the others by a country mile.
But better than others like Ruth, Williams, and Foxx?
It’s weird to celebrate Bonds and just hate on or at best ignore what Judge is doing. PED-adjusted it’s just as special.
