I did install linux, and I use it as my main PC, but of the PS3's 40gb hdd I only gave linux 10gb of it... Sony designed the GameOS to do this, you just choose format 10GB for Other OS... then put your Linux Disc in and install... So simple.

When I want to Play PS3 I just choose from Linux.. "Boot GameOS" and it reboots back as a PS3 back and forth I go All day long
Seriously? Damn!!! Linux thinks of everything.

I am kind of surprised that Sony allows users to do this and not void the warranty as well as access to the online stuff.
