I can't really comment much on the old stuff outside of seeing some as a kid on PBS and liking it. I have made a few weak efforts to try watching some of them more recently but the production values/cardboard sets really turned me off.

The new series is good but terribly inconsistent since you have to deal with a few truly shit episodes which are offset by some of really solid ones. I usually don't notice writers names on a particular series but anything written by Steven Moffat has been mostly really damn good. Fortunately he has taken over the show for this season so I am extremely optimistic about the show's future.

I highly recommend "The Girl in the Fireplace" and "Blink" but you really can't go wrong with any of them. Moffat's other series, Jekyll is also good shit. Coupling is also hilarious but not the same genera.
