Another Surtain thread? You goddamned right

I've made it pretty obvious this guy is THE ONE that I think will lead us to the promised land. Or should I say the final piece of the illustrious puzzle. This is mostly old news, I just found it interesting that the Miami papers are now talking about the possibility of a 4th rounder this year and a conditional 2nd rounder next year being acceptable. That would be awesome from this Chiefs fans chair. I just post this stuff as I find it, if it's getting old let me know and I'll knock it off.

Miami adds Edwards to defensive backfield
By Greg A. Bedard

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Tuesday, April 05, 2005

In a move that could signal the departure of cornerback Patrick Surtain, the Dolphins on Monday announced the signing of veteran cornerback Mario Edwards to a one-year contract.

The financial terms of the deal were not available, but Edwards, 29, is believed to have signed for the veteran's minimum to join a defensive backfield that currently is crowded.
But if Surtain is traded to Kansas City as expected, Edwards would compete with Reggie Howard and Will Poole for the spot opposite Sam Madison. If Surtain remains in Miami, Edwards would be the favorite at the nickel spot.

The Chiefs have agreed to Surtain's contract terms — including an eight-figure signing bonus — but continue to face off with the Dolphins over compensation. Dolphins coach Nick Saban said last week that he will insist on at least a third-round draft choice — most likely a second-rounder. But the Chiefs have not yet offered more than a fourth-round pick.

While the Chiefs may give in to the Dolphins' demands, a compromise might be reached with Kansas City sending Miami its fourth-round selection this year and a conditional second-round pick next year. The second-round pick would be contingent on Surtain making enough starts.

By signing the 6-foot, 200-pound Edwards, Saban continues to remake his defense into the big, physical unit that he desires.

Edwards spent his first four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, who drafted him in the sixth round of the 2000 draft from Florida State. Edwards played for Tampa Bay last season.

In his career, Edwards has made 50 starts with 195 tackles, four interceptions and 33 passes defensed.

I believe having good blitzing linebackers and using them wisely is the key to a great pass defense.. If you can't blitz, you're pretty much fooked in todays NFL IMO..
Joe Seahawk nailed it.

While the Chiefs definitely could use Surtain, pass defense starts in the opponents backfield. If a QB gets 4+ seconds to throw the ball, it won't matter who's playing CB -- someone will get open. KC needs another LB or even rush end to accomplish that.

I say trade the 2nd for Surtain, move up and get DJ or Pollack by offering this year's first, one of the later picks we've got (4th or 5th) plus a conditional 2nd next year.

Not sure about the "value chart" teams use if this would too much or not enough, but it's a place to start. Regardless, I would not give up next year's first for anything, even if Carl will draft a freaking FB with it.

A third next year is generally regarded to have the same value as a 4th this year. So you would be getting a Pro Bowl corner for 2 4th round picks? I'm not sure Saban is willing to do that. Though I do think it is all posturing at this point, it seems that Saban will not be giving Surtain away.

Apr. 5 - The Miami Herald is reporting that the Dolphins are looking to trade the No. 2 pick in this year's draft. With so many areas of need, the Dolphins are trying to secure as many picks as possible. It's unclear who might be willing to deal with Miami, but potential trade partners should emerge as the April 23-24 draft approaches, speculates the newspaper.
