114 over 67 ... 64 beats per minute

my latest brush with death encouraged me to buy a simple blood pressure machine.

114/67

64 heartbeats per minute (resting)

how's that?

Laz,

Great numbers, but did I miss something, did you ever find the cause of the lightheadness (besides your liberal leanings ). Hope all is resolved.

Bianchi. Yes, I've tried a mountian bike and hated it immediately. I've been riding road bikes since I was 6 (Dad was semi-pro) so that's not much of a surprise.

112/72 when I gave blood a few days ago. I was a bit nervous which probably increased the heart rate a tad.

Hey Donger, your exactly the guy I need to talk to. I have started cycling in my free time, usually just 30-40 miles/week, I may try to work myself up on that this summer.

When I moved to Des Moines last month, I immediately noticed that this area has bike trails every-freaking-where. The state has a bike trail budget > $2 Mill and the bike paths are heavily used, so I figured what the hell, I'll join the crowd and get a little more serious.

Problem is, I have a beat-up Mountain bike thats great for the cruddy roads and paths I was used to in Kansas, but I feel so slow on these well-kept roads in Iowa. What should I buy? I can afford a fairly decent bike, but I'm not going to go crazy with an expensive professional bike/gear either. What should I expect to spend, and what should I look for in name brands, bike specs, etc?

All that cycling you did most likely increased your heart muscle and aided in your ability to process oxygen in the blood stream, thus lowering your heart rate.

Did you give up cycling?
Never give up cycling. I have always cycled. Five years ago I got serious. I started spin classes. Drop my heart rate from the low 80s to a 60 last week during a check up. RAGBRAI in two weeks. Party on.
