Meeting your best friend. How?

Consider for a moment your best friend in the world, if you don't count immediate family members such as spouse, sibling, parent, child, etc.

How did you meet that person?

You will be shocked to learn that a poll is forthcoming.

The thing is that I don't classify any of them as better that the other. They are all not just good but great friends and I would put my life on the line for all of them as I feel they would me.

The only person in the world I value more than my friends is my wife, she would truly be my best friend.

I had a best friend since 5th grade. Then he screwed two of my girlfriends, ran our business into the ground and almost got me divorced. We aren't friends anymore.

So...any theories on why junior high seems to be particularly fertile ground for making best friends?

I guess one theory I might have is that, at that age, you're just old enough to really do things on your own. Therefore, the friends you make may be the first friends you really bond with doing "your own thing". Also, maybe you end up with these folks for half a dozen years through high school, whereas your elementary friends may end up going to different schools or moving or something.

Quite fascinating.

There are four people I'll refer to as my best friend - two I've known since high school, one since the Navy, and one I met right after I got out. But of the four, the No. 1 guy is one I met my junior year right after moving to Kirksville. The first time I saw him, though, was about a month before school started. I was mowing my aunt's yard, a gig he had had until I came to town; she never liked him, and basically fired him when I got there. So I'm pushing the mower, and there's this kid mowing another yard across the fence giving me a dirty look. So our first impressions were "Who's that asshole who took my job?" and "Why is that idiot staring at me?"

I would say that that is a very defining time for us. We're growing up and becoming our own persons... I think that's the biggest reason. Until then, everyone's friends generally. It's in junior high that jocks start to become jocks, music geeks start to become music geeks, etc.
