Let's play a game of music shuffle

Okay I'm drinkin' by myself and bored.

Go to your music library, hit shuffle and list the first 10 songs that come up.

Let's see what you got.

Holy shit. It sounds a lot better than I expected.

1. Mars Volta - "Cassandra Geminni - A. Tarantism"

Mars Volta tracks are really their most powerful when played in the context of the album, so it robs "Cassandra" of most of its proggy power. This track wanders around towards the end but for most of it this is a fascinating listen.

2. Drums & Tuba - "Flatheads & Spoonies"

As much as I love a good tuba instrumental, this song suffers from a lazy, repetitive melody and some genuinely poor tuba playing.

3. Pat Benatar - "Hell Is For Children"

I still haven't the slightest idea what Pat's trying to say here. Some kids have it rough? All with an overwrought 80s guitar solo.

4. Bonnie Raitt - "I Know"

Pretty standard meandering about a woman wagging her finger at her poor choice of men. Nice trumpet solo.

5. The Rascals - "A Beautiful Morning"

Total Sunday afternoon classic. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh....

6. Beck - "Cellphone's Dead"

Everybody's forgotten about this guy, but The Information was as good an album as he's put out in years. This trippy dork rap is the natural progression for him.

7. Rosanne Cash - "Mirror Image"

Cash is alright, particularly because she's sincere about her craft. I just have trouble identifying with her folksy tremblings on eyes and trees.

8. Zebrahead - "Get Back"

Remember when 90's rock tried different shit? This is probably one of the top five best rap rock songs that came out of that doomed decade.

9. Indigo Girls - "Power Of Two"

I know, I know. Turn in my man card. But 1200 Curfews is one of my favorite live albums ever. Great personal rendering of their recorded music -- especially this track. "Multiply life by the power of two" -- great stuff.

10. anonymous - "Reminiscing at Twilight"

Great stripped-down, piano version of "Reminiscing" off a Piano Therapy album packed with that kinda stuff.

One of the more brilliant tracks from The Times They Are A-Changin'. A simple, stark dissection of a family suffering from a layoff at the coal mine.

2. Orbital - "Know Where To Run"

Middle of Nowhere was a twilight album for Orbital, but this was one of the more enduring pieces from it. An aggressive staticy mess that devolves into deep beats, it's an Orbital favorite.

3. The Beatles - "Savoy Truffle"

Honestly, another trippy gem from the totally drugged-out Beatles era, a groovy track that sounds like they were just really hungry when they wrote it.

4. The Righteous Brothers - "Bring Your Love To Me"

Whatever happened to the Temptations-like boy bands? Are they really that outdated? Am I really that gay?

5. Tom Waits - "In The Neighborhood"

A sentimental-albeit-goofy track from Swordfishtrombones, delivered with the backing of a marching band. Why not.

6. John Legend - "Let's Get Lifted"

I was disappointed with Lifted. He needs to abandon hip hop and stick with the piano solo thing. This isn't all that bad, it's just not the trancedant stuff he does when it's just him and the piano.

7. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - "Will The Circle Be Unbroken"

Souful bluegrass is a part of all of us here in flyover country, isn't it? Sentimental hummer about somebody's mother passing.

8. DJ Wally - "Out of the Blue"

Spacey jazz tune, really light on the instrumentation, with echoed beats from Jupiter radio'd in.

9. Robert Randolph & the Family Band - "Calypso"

This is why I really liked RR when he first came out. His band had chops and they could play a wide range of styles. This is a rock/lounge hybrid that's a bit too heavy on the organ.

10. Alison Krauss & Union Station - "I'm Alone Again"

It doesn't sound so bad being abandoned when you've got a bluegrass soundtrack this sweet.
Dude, I'm cancelling my subscription to Rolling Stone. Why pay for that when I can read your posts for free?
