Alfred E. Neuman Death Watch
What? Me Worry About Death?
I'm very, very sad. Interestingly, Radar recently stopped publishing a print edition and is now web-only. Due to falling sales and a worsening economy, venerable humor mag Mad is giving up its monthly schedule to come out quarterly. The magazine, which began as a comic book in 1952 and shifted to magazine size with issue #24, sold 2 million copies at its peak. Current figures are roughly one-tenth that. The mag's companion titles, Mad Kids an Mad Classics are being canned altogether. The change comes in April, with the 500th issue and the price will go to $5.99 -- up a buck. Insiders tell RadarOnline.com that as soon as parent TimeWarner can figure out how to make the title work online, the print edition will probably cease altogether. Yeah...me worried. http://tinyurl.com/cuus2z |

I folded over so many back pages as a kid, I got to the point I could figure out the picture without even folding it up

I used to stand at the magazine rack reading MAD while my mom did her shopping.

I used to read and buy them a lot, up to fairly recently, really. I have a ton of them in my basement along with the little compilation books that I bought at used book stores. But it's basically become a vehicle for Republican bashing. Which is fine, I guess, but I would just prefer that it bash both sides and it doesn't. And I know it's always been sort of like that, but it wasn't always so heavy handed.
Plus a lot of the bits just aren't that funny. |
