There are several rules that tip UFC fights in the strikers favor. Fans want to see striking, so they do standups when guys are inactive on the ground, break up clinches that might eventually lead to takedowns, and installed 5 minute rounds which also cause standups. If the guys were wearing shirts/kimono's takedowns are easier, add in the greasing scandals and you can imagine how hard it would be to do a takedown on a greased fighter. First thing a boxer usually needs to do is change their stance a little though, a traditional boxing stance leaves you pretty vulnerable to leg kicks.
Good takedown defense + ability to get to your feet when taken down + world class striking = championship formula for the street or cage. |
