Top Notre Dame recruit dies on spring break

I went on spring break 3 times and I saw these kids climbing around on the balconies. Monkeying around 3 stories up did not look smart and one kid died from falling the week before I got there. But those were clearly potential darwin awards and I don't for sure, but seeing it first hand and how careless they act climbing around 3+ stories up and my first instinct tells me that this is another darwin award, but I could be wrong.

A Cincinnati high school football player who was one of the nation's most sought-after recruits died early Friday evening after a fall from a balcony on a Panama City, Fla., beach.

St. Xavier offensive lineman Matt James, 17, died after falling from a third-floor balcony at a hotel according to police reports. He was in Panama City on vacation.

The 6-foot-6, 291-pound tackle had committed to play football for Notre Dame this fall. He was selected a first-team All-American by USA Today after leading St. Xavier to a No. 4 state ranking.

James played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 9 in San Antonio, Texas.

St. Xavier officials said several hundred friends and faculty, many holding candles, gathered at the school's stadium after receiving the news.

"For this many people to appear on the first night of spring break is a testament both to Matt and to the strength of the St. X community in difficult times," said Mark Motz, a high school spokesman.

James also played on his school's basketball team, which won a district championship last month.

Damn, I was hoping we would draft him in the first round to play right tackle.

Really? Teenagers aren't exactly known for their senses of perspective and decision-making... You call it a Darwin award, I call it puberty.

well we have, well probably, all done reckless things. Darwinism is just what you are saying. Survival of the fittest, weeding out those too dumb to survive. no matter how drunk you are, you should know that it's very stupid to climb around balconies a few stories up. The kid dropped, won himself a darwin award. probably.

Lord knows I have done some stupid things, but I'm still alive

I love these "He was such a bright light in community" post-mortems. Yes, most of our best and brightest hang from 3rd story balconys.

Yes, part of it is being young and thinking you're invincible and immortal. But there's a threshhold of plain stupidity that gets crossed. I was a teenager, and I don't remember being stupid enough to think I could jump from one balcony to another, or surf the escalator handrail, or anything of that ilk.

I'm a bit of a libertarian. I don't begrudge anyone their ability to lead their lives the way they want, even if it includes killing themselves. whether you're doing dumb shit, or just dangerous shit (extreme sports, rock climbing, sky diving, whatever), you're fully entitled to do it. Just don't expect me not to laugh and to act all somber if you kill yourself.
