I don't eat the heel and generally bypass the first non-heel piece too. It is noticeably drier than the more interior pieces. I leave them in place to protect the rest of the loaf. If we actually finish a loaf (a rarity in our house) that first non-heel piece will eventually get eaten. I'll even eat the heel in a pinch. Or if we make meatloaf or need fresh bread crumbs for another use, the heel is ideal.

I rarely eat the heel. It's good for croutons and bread crumbs. I usually buy whole wheat bread which is less likely to dry out, so that's not an issue.

I use the heel to protect the bread during it's life expectency.
If however I'm having an egg for breakfast one heel is the primary piece I use to dunk into the yolk. On the other heel I place the half eaten egg and eat it like a piece of pizza. After being toasted and buttered of course. |

Depends on what I'm using the bread for.
A sandwich, I love the heels. Toast, no.

I hate to cook, and thank heaven I have a wife to cook for me. When I was single, I lived on fast food.
