DNSChanger Virus Safety Net Going Down 07/09/12

Apparently a virus (DNSChanger) was foiled last year, and the FBI erected a "safety net" of servers to help with the fix. They were designed to redirect anyone infected away from scam sites. The servers go down July 9th of this year.

Happens from time to time, but is rare these days.

What's the benefit to the FBI in this situation? There's been thousands of malware instances in the past decade. Why would the FBI step in on a DNS issue like this? Why aren't they helping malware prevention in other areas that are just as dangerous to the public?

Again, I'm not trying to make accusations. I don't think the government is working against its citizens. But this whole thing was stupid the way it went down....
