Covitz:Alarm bells briefly ring for Chiefs’ Eric Fisher

Alarm bells briefly ring for Chiefs’ Eric Fisher
By RANDY COVITZ
The Kansas City Star
It looked a bit ominous when Chiefs rookie offensive tackle Eric Fisher, escorted by club medical personnel, headed for the locker room Friday night during the first half’s 2-minute warning.

Fisher, the first overall pick in the 2012 draft, started at right tackle against the New Orleans Saints and participated in all 14 plays of the game’s opening touchdown drive.

As it turned out, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Fisher’s injury was minor, a sore left thumb. But Fisher spent quite a bit of time in the trainer’s room with ice on the thumb after the 17-13 loss to the Saints.

“I just banged up my thumb a little bit,” Fisher said. “My hands have been banged up all camp. We’ll find out more … but I’m feeling all right.”

Fisher couldn’t pinpoint exactly when he got hurt.

“You’re in a zone out there,” he said. “You try to remember, but sometimes you don’t. When I came off the field, my thumb was hurting a little bit, and I got it checked out.”

After he was examined, Fisher returned to the sidelines and watched the second half from the bench with the rest of the first unit.

“I had a blast tonight,” he said. “It was great to play in an NFL game. It was a goal of mine for a long time, and it’s a good feeling.”

If Fisher is unable to practice or play this week, he’ll join growing list of injured tackles. Backup Donald Stephenson missed the past week after undergoing surgery on a broken pinky finger on his left hand, though he is expected to return next week.

The club already has lost two rookie free agent tackles for the season, Dustin Waldron and Colin Kelly with knee injuries, and Tommie Draheim is out with a concussion. The Chiefs brought in another free agent tackle on Thursday, Hutch Erickson, who was in uniform Friday night.

Besides Fisher’s injury, backup defensive end Austin Lane left the game with sore ribs, and cornerback Neiko Thorpe was dehydrated and cramped.

Heh, that's what you think.

I'm not looking for reasons to bash the guy. I'm looking for reasons not to bash the guy. I want to like the pick and I want to like Eric Fisher, but he has to prove he was worth 1.1 over any other player in the draft. He has to prove he is a stud OT in the league. I want to feel good about our 1.1 draft pick. So far he hasn't impressed me. I hope he gets to prove his worth this season. Right now I don't want to hear about his hands hurting for any excuse. I'm sure he is tough though he should be tough as nails for his position and where he was picked.

When your sore fingers are the reason given for not playing as well as your peers and the X-rays come back as there being no problem...you need to stfu and play the game at a high level and play through the pain.

FFS Ronnie Lott cut a finger off in the middle of a game.

No excuses.
The part you are missing is he hasn't made 1 single excuse nor has anyone else except it being mentioned in a John Clayton article.

Then AFTER they got done playing he went to get his thumb checked out, again no excuses form him or anyone else.

You are building a straw man on this subject dude. Creating an issue that really doesn't exist.

What do you mean "not play at a high level"? You're getting riled up over a few rough practices. He looked fine in the first preseason game and had no reason to want to be taken out or to have a bad hand as an excuse. In fact, I'm sure he would have welcomed more snaps, because he would have been able to play against the second team. The idea that he should risk further injury in the first preseason game that means nothing is ridiculous. This accusation is just absurd. And just because his x-rays came back negative, doesn't mean he isn't having problems with it.

Sorry, Boss, I like a lot of what you write. But this is baseless and below the belt over something we don't know anything about. You're questioning his toughness and making a pretty bold accusation that he's faking an injury.

O-Lineman have to get their hands under the pads.

If your fingers are jacked up, that can be problematic.
