Yeah, I'm not old enough to remember watching these teams, but two teams that seem to rank highly are the 84 Twins, who had Gaetti, Puckett, etc.. and especially the 73 Orioles. They had a defensive team WAR over 13. Not sure if anyone's done better than that. They apparently hold the record for defensive runs saved too. They had Brooks Robinson, so that helps, but they also had a middle infield combo of two guys who almost had 4 WAR apiece.

That was a really solid team. Fernandez was really slick.

That surprises me about the 84 Twins....Beyond Puckett in the outfield I don't remember being impressed that much with their OF position players. Now, Gaetti and Hrbek were good in the IF, but Jiminez and Tuefel weren't that great from what I remember.

The 73 Orioles don't surprise me....Robinson at 3rd, Belanger at SS, Grich at 2nd Base and Boog Powell at 1st....that was a tight infield. Blair in CF and Rettemund were good, but I don't remember Baylor being that great defensively.

What surprises me is that the 72 or 73 Red's aren't in the discussion. Bench at Catcher, Tony Perez at 1st, Joe Morgan at 2nd, Davey Concepcion at SS, and Dennis Menke (probably the weak link there) at 3rd Base. The Outfield was Pete Rose in Left, Bobby Tolan in Center and Cesar Geronimo in RF.
