I'm glad I don't have allergies. That stuff sounds like no fun.

Must be genetic or where you're raised when you're a baby. How does one get or avoid allergies?

It's largely environmental. You can't really avoid them aside from moving to a different climate. They are just an immune hypersensitivity reaction.

There is a genetic component. Everybody on my dads side has them.

You can develop them. A local guy puts up hay and developed an allergy. Had to turn it all over to his kid.

Is there a material difference between xyzal and Zyrtec? Xyzal recently became OTC.

They are mostly genetic. What I was referring to is that you will experience them based upon the environment you are in. Think of them as milder versions of other autoimmune disorders: RA, psoriasis, lupus, etc. The mechanisms are different, but the culprit is an overactive immune system.

Xyzal is the active enantiomer of Zyrtec (levocetirizine vs. cetirizine), so it will be twice as potent on a unit-dose basis.

Stereoisomers are molecules with the same chemical formula and structure, but that reflect plane polarized light in opposite direction. This is extremely important. For example, effectively all amino acids found in nature are left-handed (they are the left-handed enantiomer).

Another example is Celexa and Lexapro. Celexa is a mixture of both right and left-handed molecules. Lexapro is the left-handed molecule only (the active form). Thus, it is twice as potent per milligram, which is why Lexapro doses are half of Celexa doses.

So, what happens when this goes wrong? Sometimes very little (if you took 10mg of Celexa, when you're used to 10mg of Lexapro, your symptoms would likely worsen somewhat), sometimes Thalidomide.

When the Thalidomide controversy was discovered in the early 60's, it was determined that one enantiomer was an excellent sedative used to treat morning sickness (its original intention), but the other enantiomer inhibited the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) which led to children being born with missing or shortened limbs.

you cant, you either have it or you dont. I didnt have allergies until i was like 28 years old. One year, i just started sneezing up a ****ing storm and everything i mean everything itched. 12 years later and this has been one of the worst years for it because in California, it rained and everything came back to life lol
