LEE'S SUMMIT, MO (KCTV) -
Students at Lee's Summit North High School were sent home early on Friday after another student tragically took their own life in a second-floor bathroom.

Lee's Summit police responded to the school at about 7:50 a.m.

Students at the school reported hearing a gunshot from a second-floor bathroom. Police entered the room and found a student. That student was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The student passed away soon after arriving at the hospital.

The school, located at 901 NE Douglas Street, was put on a soft lockdown and students were kept in their classrooms so paramedics could quickly get upstairs. Then, all students not involved in the incident were sent home at 9:15 a.m.


Police do not believe that anyone was in the bathroom when the incident happened, but they are still trying to figure out if students and teachers ran into the bathroom to help after hearing the gunshot.

Officers did not say how the student tried to inflict harm.

The school district says only LSN will be released early.

Students who drive themselves to school were able to leave on their own and normal bus routes continued.

The district notified parents of the incident.

Friday's football game between Lee's Summit North High School and Blue Springs High School has been postponed. The game will be played at 2 p.m. on Saturday.


According to the city of Lee's Summit, the district provided counselors to students and staff who wanted to talk after the dismissal today. A plan is in place to continue that support next week.

Officers with the Lee's Summit Police Department are in the process of talking with family. Sgt. Chris Depue said, “Our hearts are broken right along with district staff. It’s a tragic event.”

Police are also building a timeline and trying to figure out where the weapon came from.

It's been 6 years since one of my best friends "opted out".

I have put it behind me, I don't get angry or really even emotional anymore. I still think about him, though.

Not only did his death end our relationship, but an entire network of friends. It's hard to see them again.

Had a friend kill himself his senior year of high school. NO ONE saw it coming. Went home for lunch one day, planted himself in his famly's backyard shed, put the shotgun between his legs and blew his head off (literally).

I once worked with a patient who tried to kill himself. He was a 17 year old autistic kid. Somehow when he put the gun inside his mouth, he had it tilted too far forward and literally blow off his entire nose and upper jaw. Was just a gaping triangle shaped hole where those two items were. Missed his brain completely.


Get help if you ever think that's the answer. It's ok to admit you feel hopeless.

There was a guy in the town that I grew up in that killed him self. He covered the living room in white sheets so he wouldn't ruin any of their stuff.

This kid I went to High School with was about to get married about 6 years after we graduated. Just bought a house, had a new job and was supposed to be in St. Louis to finish up the final details of his wedding. Found him hanging by a noose in his hotel room. His family took it extremely hard, still wonder why he did it with his whole life set.

I can't imagine what it's like for friends and family of this kid. I gotta admit something though, I kinda tried to kill myself last weekend via alcohol and I ended up falling asleep before I could finish the job. There was/is a lot of internal stress going on and I stayed at a friends house, and once he fell asleep I tried to drink an entire bottle of whiskey within a couple hours (plus everything else we'd had that night, which was a lot). I wrote a text to a couple of my close friends letting them know about my issues that night and that was before I knew if I'd wake up or not.

Luckily I did wake up face down on the floor, not my back. But I've put a lot more thought into that kind of suicide mentality here over the last week and I'm changing a few things about myself. As far as being introverted and shy, etc, there's not much I can do about that right now.

I've always been that way. I even walked right past Clay at Chiefs camp, but due to my own self insecurities I didn't say a word. That's how I've always been, and when I think about it, I don't have that much to be insecure about in the first place. My rant's over, I feel terrible for the family involved here.

Lost my brother in January of 16 to suicide. Just finalized a divorce, lost his job of being a cop and got involved with a crazy b*tch. I got married that summer and needed a new best man and asked my old man to do it. Hard to even type this and I feel for the kids family and friends. I can understand it if you're in severe physical pain with no fix but otherwise suicide is not the answer
