Oh, I see what you're saying now. You're talking about the actual start of the season - Game 1, Week 1.

Obviously, that's irrelevant. If they cut him in March and he signs with another team, they're not paying him a dime of his 2019 salary. Whoever signs him is.

It's a league rule. Any fully-vested veteran cut after the season starts will still get full pay for that year.

Right, that means week 1 of the actual games, not the first day of the new year (March). They aren't going to cut him in September.

Right, but the wording in Berry's contract gets him some guaranteed money in march.

I hope you are right but i don't think so. The Chiefs guaranteed 40 million dollars to Eric Berry. There was 20 million paid to him in signing bonus and another 20 million guaranteed to him throughout the rest of the contract.

Even if you are right, the Chiefs only have 21 days before another 7.2 million becomes guaranteed. If Berry has the knee surgery tomorrow he will still probably get the 7.2 million because of injury rehab status.

Why would Berry wait until now? If he had the surgery a month ago, he wouldn't be able to pass a physical, would get all of his money, AND would potentially be healing and feeling better by now, getting himself ready for a new team.

Waiting this long makes no sense if all he wanted to do was fail a physical. There just has to be more to it than that.
