The complete job wasn't that bad but one portion of it really sucked....Park Maintenance out on a lake. I had to weed whip along the lake front of the park which was covered in large rock and the area contained copperheads....So not only did I have to walk on top of these big rocks and try to avoid breaking my ankle to cut down all the weeds but also had to try and avoid getting bit by poisonous snakes in the process. Nearly stepped on several and slashed the head off of one with the weed wacker. It took about 6 hours a week to trim that area. Hot and dangerous.

Trash route and not on a compact truck,a large truck with the high sides that you had to sling the bags up and over.

First paper route when I was in 2nd grade. I had a house with the biggest dog in the world. And there was the old yelling man too.
Detasseling was bad. Picking up the Young Arena was bad too. But at least with detasseling I could listen to my Bob Dylan and think. And at least with the Young Arena I could flirt with the hot girls that went to the hockey games. |

Come to think of it, the Park Maintenance job required that also...Had to go around the camp grounds on the weekends and empty out the campers trash barrels and toss them up over the really tall walls of a big trash truck....Watermelon season was a effin blast.

Quaker Wheat Germ plant in Manhattan, KS.
My job was to feed the auger to keep the ovens fed. I stood on a grid platform 15ft above the floor in a huge ass metal building in the summer. I had three bins on one side and 8 to 10 feet away I had three pallettes of 100lb bags of wheat germ. I had to move about one every 15s on average. It must have been 120 degrees up there and dusty as hell. Followed closely by a midnight door-to-door paper route in the dead of winter. Took about 3 1/2 hours to walk around this neighborhood delivering the Olathe Daily Snooze. |

Probably the worst working conditions were when I was in the John Deere foundry. Hotter than tamales in the summer time and colder then ice in the winter. Plus the smell was just disgusting. And sand doesn't taste that great either.
The job I hated the most was a stock man at K-mart in the early 80's. They had 4 different store managers with 2-3 on duty at all times. You would just finish a project like shelving on the end of an aisle or a whole aisle and another manager would come by and make you tear it all down and move it minutes after you had finished it. Plus they treated you like low life scum. To this day I would like to punch all of them in the face just once. That would make me
