What is the major job of a tight end verses the running back?

I am not a genius when it comes to football, but I love it.

Depends on the style of offense.

Some TEs are in there strictly for blocking purposes and some are in there strictly as an extra pass catching receiver.

I would have to say that most TEs are there to block and become the safety valve for the QB, while taking advantage of the LBs.

TE plays on the line of scrimmage - outside the tackle. His primary roles: blocking, receiving (usually in that order).

RB lines up in the backfield. Primary Roles: rushing, blocking, receiving (once again, usually in that order).

There are only a few TEs that act as solid receivers - Gonzo, Sharpe, Wycheck, Walls.

Most are there for extra protection for the QB while providing blocking for run support.

Because you could get the best young TE in the game injured... plus, what value would that really add? KC has plenty of good RBs, no need to add him to the mix.

It depends. For most tight ends it's blocking and receiveing. However, for TE's with the last name Sharpe, your primary job is to run your mouth 24x7.

I was waiting for that and I knew that YOU wouldn't let me down. :D

Sharpe should be going to Canton after he retires. You may hate him, but he is the best pass catching TE in NFL history. True, his blocking is questionable, but the guy is solid and he's a good guy off the field.

Do you mean why haven't we run running plays with TG, as a TE, running the ball, or why haven't we put TG in the backfield as a running back and run him from there?

If its the first instance, at the snapp TG is lined up 2-3 yards outside and slightly ahead of Grbac [if Grbac's under center, not from the shotgun]. For him to run, he'd have to go back as far as Elvis does, across the formation and then turn upfield if he wants any positive yards. The only way that works is on an 'end-around.' An end-around depends on trickery [never a Chief's staple] or outright speed. When it is run by the Chiefs, they usually use the faster Alexander or Lockett, who can get across the formation and to the opposite corner much faster than Gonzalez could.

If you mean the second, well there's already too many mediocre RBs to put in the back field, and [so far as I know] only one world-class TE on the team. Why take him from a place of dominance, and place him in the herd?

thanks for the honest answers to my question. I really did not understand the formation thing before. Now you have all cleared it up. Thanks

Hey Pam,

Tony's deadliness lies in the fact that he's a very big and very athletic target for a QB to throw to. A lot of the physical assets he has as a tight-end (e.g. the height, speed and upper-body-strength that help him get away from the linebackers, safeties and cornerbacks that are trying to keep him from catching passes) would be wasted or even undesirable in a running back. Looking at it the other way--Barry Sanders was a hell of running back, but his talents would not have been well-suited for the tight-end position.
