Court date for traffic ticket

So a few weeks ago I got pulled over for speeding here in KC. When the officer asked to see my proof of insurance, I couldn't find a current copy...though I did have one from previous months. He gave me the speeding ticket (which is fine...I was speeding) and a ticket for no proof of insurance. He told me that all I needed to do was send in proof of current insurance when I received the ticket in the mail, and they would wipe it out.

As it turns out, it's not that simple. After talking to someone from the online KC court system info dept, I learned that I actually have to set a court date and appear in court. I have the proof of insurance, so that's not a problem. What I'm wondering is, do I need a lawyer? Do I need documentation other than the proof of insurance? Has anyone ever dealt with this? Thanks for any help.

Nope, there's usually soemone there that'll point you to the correct person to show proof of insurance to.

No lawyer needed. Now, if I were you I'd pay a lawyer to get that ticket off ur record. It's worth the one time $250 or so and not the extra monthly hike in insurance for at least 3 years.

No "speeding" tickets in about 5 years now.

Soon as I get them I call my lawyer and just mail ticket and check to him.

I had the same issue in KC. I had insurance but had an outdated proof of insurance in the car. He gave me a ticket anyway. I got a lawyer and paid them $350.00 total(that includes court costs and fines). They got the speeding ticket reduced to a defective equipment ticket, no points off the licsense and no increase in insurance. I faxed them a copy of the insurance card and thats all I had to do. They went to court and did everything else for me.

Bummer...I already paid the speeding ticket. I'm just going to court for the proof of ins.

So another question...

I already have the court date set and I'm not planning to get a lawyer now. Will I have to pay any court costs?

I had to show the judge my insurance card and left after that. It was a 2 minute drill with the judge.
