Latest Ty Law Drama...Poston meeting with the Jets to discuss contract parameters...
Updated: Aug. 3, 2005, 12:46 PM ET
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/column...len&id=2123496 Law's agent, Jets to discuss financial parameters Pasquarelli By Len Pasquarelli ESPN.com In what could be the first step toward an eventual contract agreement, or the latest indication that Ty Law's financial expectations are unreasonable, agent Carl Poston is scheduled to meet Wednesday with New York Jets officials. Ty Law Cornerback New England Patriots Profile 2004 SEASON STATISTICS Tot Ast Solo FF Sack Int 28 23 5 0 0 1 Law, who is still rehabilitating from the left foot injury that limited him to seven games in 2004, will not accompany Poston to the meeting. The Jets, who are believed to have the inside track on signing Law, have not yet asked him to work out, and whether such a request is forthcoming might depend on how much progress is made during the financial discussions. Poston indicated that it might be better to first determine if the two sides are in accord on the basic financial parameters for a potential deal before advancing to the next step and bringing in Law for an on-field audition. New York has stayed in touch with Law and his agents for the past few months now and the retirement of veteran corner Donnie Abraham two weeks ago left the Jets in need of a replacement. The current candidates include longtime nickel cornerback Ray Mickens and rookie Justin Miller, a second-round choice. New York on Tuesday signed a pair of cornerbacks, Brandon Haw and Roosevelt Williams, to help get through a stretch of injuries. But a healthy Law would certainly be a high-profile addition and help compensate for the exit of Abraham, who retired to spend more time with his family and to pursue a number of business opportunities. Law is said to have great admiration for Jets coach Herm Edwards, a superior salesman and recruiter, and the two have spoken at various times in the offseason. Law has also gotten sales pitches from Jets tailback Curtis Martin and secondary coach Corwin Brown, both of whom were onetime teammates of his in New England. He also has a five-year-old daughter who lives in New York. And there is this element as well: If he signed with the Jets, Law would have a chance to face the Patriots twice annually in AFC East competition. Poston said that, while it was not fair to characterize Wednesday's meeting as "heating up" negotiations with the Jets, there is mutual interest. Poston did tell the New York Daily News that he viewed the face-to-face meeting, which will include Jets assistant general manager Mike Tannenbaum, who negotiates contracts for the club, as a "good sign" that things might move forward. To date, Law has worked out twice for the Detroit Lions and once each with Kansas City and Jacksonville. The Jets will want to get him onto a field at some point and assess just where he is in terms of being fully recovered from the foot injury. Law, 31, last year turned down a four-year, $24 million offer from New England, which released him in February for salary cap reasons. He had been adamant this offseason about not accepting a minimum-salary contract and has publicly stated he wants a deal commensurate to his status as a four-time Pro Bowl performer. Privately, though, Law has conceded to confidants that he understands he will probably not land a contract that pays him $6 million per year. How much the Jets are willing to pay, and how much that number is stoked by their need for a big-time cornerback, could be determined in Wednesday's meeting. "I'd like to think we're in the same ballpark," Poston told the Daily News. "But one side might be in left field and the other might be in right." Law might be getting close to being able to work out full-speed for potential suitors. Two weeks ago, Lisa Kearns of the Miami-based SportFit Rehab and Training, the physical therapist and exercise physiologist who has been working with Law for months now, told ESPN.com that she felt the star cornerback was very close to being able to audition. She said said she was confident Law would play in the NFL in '05 and would perform at a high level. "He's just about there [in his recovery]," said Kearns. "He's able to make hard cuts now and we've just got to turn that up some. But I think he looks just great." |

I'll believe Ty Law signs a contract when I hear it is signed and delivered to the NFL office. At this point I wish he would go the fug away. Hearing about him every week signing a contract with every single team he visits is driving me nuts.

Poston: "We're looking at 60 mill over 5 years with $14 mill gauranteed.'
Edwards: "We're prepared to give you this t-shirt and plastic beer cup with a Jet's logo." Poston: "well....ok, but can we tell the press the cup is worth $60 mill?" Edwards: "Sure...just remember - Ty Law isn't....ahahahahahahhahahaha!!!!1"
