Johnson Named AFC Offensive Player of The Month For Second Straight Time

http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/2006/01...straight_time/

The National Football League informed the Chiefs on Thursday that RB Larry Johnson has been named AFC Offensive Player of the Month for regular season games played in December and January. Johnson also claimed Player of the Month honors in November, making him the first player in Chiefs history to earn the award twice in the same season. He is also the first player in the NFL to win back-to-back AFC Player of the Month accolades since ‘98, when both N.Y. Jets QB Vinny Testaverde and Denver RB Terrell Davis pulled off the feat.

Johnson (6-1, 230) produced one of the most prolific late-season surges in franchise history when he racked up 145 carries for 782 yards (5.4 avg.) with 11 TDs, as well as 13 catches for 123 yards (9.5 avg.) and one TD in December and January. Over the past five games Johnson extended the longest streak in Chiefs history and tied the third-longest streak in NFL history, with nine consecutive 100-yard rushing games.

Johnson began by scoring the game-winning touchdown in a 31-27 win over AFC West rival Denver (12/4). He mounted 140 rushing yards and two TDs in that game. Next, in a road contest at Dallas (12/11), Johnson ran for 143 yards on 26 carries with three touchdowns. He followed that up with a 167-yard, two-TD rushing performance at the N.Y. Giants (12/17). The Pro Bowl rusher then faced a San Diego run defense which was ranked number one in the NFL at the time, and gashed them for 131 yards and a score in a 20-7 Chiefs victory.

Johnson however, saved his best for last in the season finale against playoff-bound Cincinnati. He toted the ball 26 times for 201 yards (7.7 avg.) with three touchdowns, as the Chiefs produced a dominating 37-3 win over the Bengals. Those 201 rushing yards were the second-highest single-game total in franchise history and were the fifth-highest single-game total in the NFL this season. Johnson registered TD runs of 49, 15 and 20 yards, giving him 20 rushing TDs on the season, the third-highest seasonal total in KC history.

Johnson is in his third season with the Chiefs after joining the club as a first-round selection in the 2003 NFL Draft. The Penn State University product appeared in 16 games this season (nine starts) and established a Chiefs single-season record, while leading the AFC with 1,750 rushing yards on 336 carries (5.2 avg.), as well as 20 touchdowns.

Congrats to him.

I wonder if he had any incentive clauses in his contract for bonuses for player of the month/week award...

Good job Larry! Imagine if he started all season! Too bad it was all for nothing.
