Draft Picks

I had no idea that when teams with identical records were determining their draft order, it was strength of schedule ONLY for the first round. After that, they rotate around.

That's the most interesting nugget here. You guys are 20th, I believe, in the 1st round, but after that I'm guessing you're 21st, then 22nd, then back to 20, etc.

I doubt many of you care about the rest, but I'm posting this off a Pats website. Here are our picks.

Draft picks

As of today, the Patriots possess nine selections in the 2006 NFL Draft. The draft will be held on April 29 and 30.

The Patriots pick 21st in the first round and then will rotate between 20-21-22 in ensuing rounds. The team also has additional selections via trades.

A look at the picks:

Round 1 -- 21st, assigned selection
Round 2 -- 20th, assigned selection
Round 3 -- 11th, from Baltimore*
Round 3 -- 22nd, assigned selection
Round 4 -- 9th, from Detroit**
Round 4 -- 21st, assigned selection
Round 5 -- 6/7th, from Oakland***
Round 5 -- 20th, traded to Browns for WR Andre' Davis
Round 6 -- 22nd, assigned selection
Round 7 -- 21st, assigned selection

* The Patriots' first 2006 third-round pick (the 11th selection of the round) was acquired from the Baltimore Ravens on April 23, 2005 along with a 2005 third-round pick (84 overall -- CB Ellis Hobbs) and a 2005 sixth-round pick (195 overall -- Traded to Green Bay) in exchange for a 2005 second-round pick (64 overall -- T Adam Terry).

** The Patriots' first 2006 fourth-round pick (the ninth selection of the round) was acquired from the Detroit Lions on April 24, 2005 in exchange for a 2005 fifth-round pick (145 overall -- QB Dan Orlovsky) and a 2005 sixth-round pick (206 overall -- DE Jonathan Goddard).

*** The Patriots' first 2006 fifth-round pick (the sixth or seventh selection of the round, depending on a coin flip) was acquired from the Oakland Raiders on April 24, 2005 along with a 2005 seventh-round pick (230 overall -- QB Matt Cassel) in exchange for a 2005 sixth-round pick (175 overall -- DT Anttaj Hawthorne).

There is also the possibility the Patriots could receive additional compensatory choices, which have yet to be determined.

I don't think we would rotate with the Pats since they made the playoffs...?

From what I understand, that doesn't make any difference.

I don't know if it's generally available anywhere. What I posted was off a Patriots sportswriter's blog.

I know Denver has the two #1 picks (one from WAS) and I read they may get a comp pick or 2 in R3 for Hayward and Kennedy.

I don't recall if they traded any picks from this year's draft or if they have extra's in other rounds from other trades.

No clue about prior trades.

Re: draft pick comp -- that's a complicated formula based on free agents signed versus lost. Hayward and Kennedy were I believe starters who were healthy all year, so that should help.

Couldn't remember who y'all signed, so I looked it up.

Courtney Brown, Stephen Alexander, and Ian Gold seem to be the significant ones. Gold is indicated as "other" -- having been apparently cut by the Bucs, so I dunno if he counts against you or not.

On balance, it doesn't appear to me that, even if you don't count Gold, losing Kennedy/Hayward and getting Brown/Alexander should mean you get a "third round pick or two".

I do know that extra picks for FA losses haven't been awarded by the NFL as of yet.

You can find 1st round order many places, but the later rounds won't be posted much until the comp picks are awarded.

Agree, it's a 'net effect' of FA.

Hey MHM -- here's your answer.

You also have Washington's 4th round pick as part of the same deal. You gave them a 1st last year for their 3 last year, and a 1 and 4 this year.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/drafttracker/trades

(go to the very bottom)

That looks to be the only deal you guys made last year, so unless you did some very long-range planning in the '04 draft, Denver has an extra 1 and 4, plus whatever comp picks you get, plus all your own picks.
