Morris Update From Realteam.com

From www.realteam.com
SLY-MOTION WITH VERMEIL

As a first-round draft pick in the 2000 NFL draft, expectations for Chiefs wide receiver Sylvester Morris were high entering his rookie campaign. The Jackson State product proceeded to go out on the field and more than live up to his pre- and post-draft hype, hauling in 48 passes for 678 yards and three touchdowns.

Heading into the 2001 off-season, his situation was looking even brighter. A new, Supewr Bowl-winning head coach. A new quarterback. And, perhaps most importantly, a new offensive system that could take advantage of his 6-3, 205-pound frame.

All of those hopes, however, came to a crashing halt yesterday as Morris suffered an injury to the ACL in his right knee during the club's final mini-camp of the off-season. While no definitive prognosis has been reached, there is a very real possibility that Morris could be lost for the entire 2001 campaign.

In a just-completed phone conversation with Dick Vermeil, the head coach told RealTeam that the injury suffered by Morris would indeed require the operation that has been widely reported the last few hours. No timetable has been set for the surgical procedure, which does not make Vermeil a happy mini-camping head coach.

"He has an injury to his knee that's going to require an operation. Our doctors would like to go tomorrow, but his agent may have other ideas," Vermeil told RealTeam. "They may want to send him out (to have their own doctors look at him), maybe have some so-called specialist look at it."

Vermeil still seemed somewhat stunned over the scope of the injury, which occurred during a seemingly innocuous passing drill. The receiver was running a "streak" pattern when a pass was overthrown, forcing both Morris and defensive back William Bartee to jump for the ball. According to Vermeil, the two "kind of bumped into each other, and Sylvester just landed wrong."

The Chiefs are having a very successful and very productive off-season program, with the implementation of the offense under the direction of offensive coordinator Al Saunders being widely reported as ahead of schedule. While the injury to Morris certainly is a blow to the club, it certainly doesn't sound a death knell to the progress that has been made.

"(Losing Morris) can't help you. Whenever you lose a starter, it's going to hurt. But we have to move on," Vermeil said. "I feel bad for the kid, but we have to continue with what we've been doing."

As to who they will continue doing that with, Vermeil stated that, as it stands right now, rookie third-round pick Marvin "Snoop" Minnis will jump into the fray as Morris' replacement. Larry Parker, who has spent the past two seasons in Kansas City, is another very viable candidate.

Vermeil also mentioned the possibility of signing a veteran still on the free agent market. Derrick Mayes and Kirby Dar Dar are two of those possibilities, Vermeil told RealTeam.
I just heard some information:

In a sports update from KC on Sports 690's Hacksaw program it is reported that he has torn ligaments in both knees and is out for the season.

Hacksaw has been known to be less than reiable however. I am crossing my fingers that that is the case this time as well.

Does anybody have better information?

My question now is:

A) has Herman Moore been signed by anyone?

B) If he has yet to be released from the lions, isn't this iminent come the next wave of cuts?

and C) although older, and obviously not the Moore of old, would he make a solid number 2 or 3 guy?

As a 2 or three reciever he may still get 60+ passes thrown his way. Much more than he may in another offense, or another team. Would he be a realistic option?

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Brad,

I am pretty sure he re-signed with the Lions recently.

It's bad enough losing Morris, but when Vermiel starts talking Kirby Dar Dar as a possible replacement, well, let's just say that don't make me a happy Chiefs fan.

Hopefully some decent recievers become available when teams start making cutdowns. Unfortunately, that won't be for a while, and at that point they'll be joining us late and have to learn the system.

Alas...

Will Slyvester be the same after this injury? Does the rehab usually determine that or can he control that?

Acually, The complete text of what DV said was he would like to bring in another Vet and a "camp guy" who might be able to add some depth. That's when he mentioned MAYES and DAR DAR.

SlyMo's injury is a setback, the Chiefs organization and fans know it. What effect it can have on an offense could be devastating but I truly doubt that it will even if no WR's are added IMO. KC WR's on the roster are.

#82 Derrick Alexander 6'2 200lbs-proven #1 WR
#20 Dante Hall 5'8 193lbs-will take some time to recover from NFLE but has great potential for depth, IMO D.Hall is the odd man out at WR.
#17 Ricky Hall 6'2 207lbs-same deal as D.Hall as far as recovery time but Ricky just seems like a J.Horn type of player that can go down field, I say he will be 1 of 6 that make the roster
#81 Tony Horne 5'9 173lbs-We know he will make the squad, ? is will he step his play up to contribute more
#5 Dave Klemic 5'11 185lbs- I'm really high on Klemic, his skills resemble R.Prhoel but with greater downfield speed. IMO Klemic will make the roster or be on the P.Squad.
#9 J.J. Moses-DV has been very impressed with his speed but in all honesty name me 1 WR that is 5'6 in the NFL that can play without being smothered by the gradually increasing size of todays DB's with atleast minimal success, J.J. is a situational WR and with Sly's injury KC can't afford for a situational rookie WR for depth
#13 Marvin Minnis 6'1 171lbs-My prediction is that Snoop will struggle at first but once he has adjusted to bigger and stronger CB's then he will do just fine.
#80 Larry Parker 6'1 205lbs-I hear he has great potential, unfortunately I have never seen it.
#12 Joe Perez 6'0 202lbs-can you say T.Camp cut
#11 Geroy Simon 6'1 188lbs-I know he played in the CFL will have to play extremely well to be noticed both by the fans and coaching staff
#87 Chris Thomas 6'0 190lbs-he has the most NFL experience next to Alexander

I admit that there is a alot of uncertainty about the unproven players but the only way for them to prove themselves is too give them a chance, now is the best time as any.

let's not forget that the TE's that KC has equate into this situation, Does the coaching staff Move Ricks back to the WR position? I wouldn't think so because Ricks has proven to struggle at that position in the NFL. Baber has the skills of S.Sharpe. Gonzales has the skills like no other has ever had. Dunn is a great talent that seemed to start to turn around his career last year thru better play let's hope he doesn't get injured, but IMO he will be a training camp casualty just based upon his speed

It is feasible for KC to go into the beginning of the season with a combined total of 10 WR and TE's, I am not saying that it will happen but it is feasible in a 53man roster

It's an injury that hurts for many reasons, but devestating, probably not. Devestating is losing DA or Gonzo for the year. The guys are going to pick up the slack. Cat definitely would have added more to the mix this year, but I suppose this gives a kid like Minnis a shot at stepping up. Lockett probably wishes he had come back, he'd have his starters job now in a reciever friendly system. Kieth Poole is looking like a 4th reciever where he decided to go. Odd how things change so quickly. I'm confident we'll find someone. Mayes would be a nice pickup...

No Moore....oh well, just an idea...

I say ta heck with it. We never really let Horne loose and he broke out in New Orleans. Parker showed at least punt return potential until his rookie mistake became a burial ceremony. Start the Kid, third wr slot...He stinks or he swims, but no more hiding behind that favorite line for half backs: "we haven't really had a chance to see him. He's made huge strides in the offseason and he just might be the answer." Play him, it's why you drafted him Carl. Remember?

Has Yancey Thigpen signed anywhere yet? He could be cheap...too bad that Tony Martin signed with Atlanta yesterday. The other former Seahags WR Sean Dawkins, along with Mayes, is also available.

A sad day for KC...I guess today is when our buddy Ken comes on the BB and goes on and on about how Carl is to blame for another 'first round bust' draft pick.

Here's hoping Minnis is a gamer.
