ESPN Rumor Central *Chiefs* tidbits.
Smith nearing decision
Wade Smith | Chiefs | Interested: Ravens? Chiefs? Smith is getting close to making a decision about a new team, writes John Clayton. The free-agent offensive lineman visited the Chiefs this week and has a visit scheduled with the Ravens Thursday. Smith made the all-rookie team in Miami in 2003 and is only 26. He could make a decision in the next day or two. Chiefs targeting Ryan? If Matt Ryan somehow drops past the Falcons, who have the No. 3 pick in the draft, all signs point to the Chiefs taking the former Boston College quarterback at No. 5. The Chiefs are the team most desperate for offensive line help, but it may be a reach for K.C. to take tackle Ryan Clady of Boise State five picks into the draft. One rumor making the rounds is Brandon Albert of Maryland. Though it may seem like a longshot for him to rise into the top five, he has a chance. He's a 6-foot-6 athlete who projects to be a guard on some teams. Others believe he could develop into a top NFL tackle. Broncos, Chiefs vying for Vanderjagt? Mike Vanderjagt | Cowboys | Interested: Broncos? Chiefs? The Broncos were expected to work out Vanderjagt on Monday, according to The Denver Post. Vanderjagt, who is still the most accurate field-goal kicker in league history (86.5 percent, 230-of-266), has also auditioned for the Chiefs. Vanderjagt, 38, last played for the Cowboys in 2006, but was released after 10 games. Sidenote: The Raiders' great debate While Al Davis may be deciding between Darren McFadden and defensive end Chris Long, sources talking to the Raiders say Davis is in love with DE Vernon Gholston's speed and athletic ability, writes John Clayton. It's not out of the question for Gholston to move ahead of Long as the week goes on because of Davis' fondness for speed. At the moment, it's a three-way debate in Oakland regarding the No. 4 pick. Mel Kiper Chat: Rick-Lowell, MA: Why do I keep hearing that Chris Long may fall out of the top 5? I think Long and Dorsey are the 2 guaranteed not to fall past 5. Am I wrong? Mel Kiper: I don't think Long. I think Long goes two to St. Louis or 5 to KC. He would be an interest as a 3-4 OLB standpoint. He could play on his feet. TD (OH): Mel, The breaking news in you sector of the industry is the Allen trade ... period! How does the trade affect the first ten picks? Mel Kiper: KC could all of a sudden could look DE over OT. They could look at Chris Long or Harvey over Brandon Albert. I think Harvey, if he goes at 5 would be one of the major reaches of the first round. He's No. 23 on my board. Louis (DC): Did the Vikings overpay for Allen? Mel Kiper: They know they're a DE away from being a dominant defense. Allen is a talented football player. They know at 17 they're not going to get a DE of his caliber. The thing about Minnesota is that they don't know if they have the right QB. The jury is still out on Jackson. This is a real good football team that is a QB away. |

Quote:
ESPN's Mock Draft (it's going on right now) Kansas City is on the clock ... What should they do? Marcus (Greensboro) says: This is easy with the trade of Allen ... time to replace him with Goulston. No brainer or this is a good place to trade with Baltimore or Carolina or a team that covets Ryan. Steve (Chicago) says: The Chiefs need Ryan Clady. Badly. John (Ames, IA) says: Now that Jared Allen is gone they have a need at D End. Take Vernon Gholston and fill the hole there. Although the Chiefs sadly seem to have holes at every position. So what do the Chiefs do? We have our first trade of the day! New Orleans trades its first-round pick (No. 10 overall) and next year's No. 1 to Kansas City for its first-round pick (No. 5) and its fifth-round pick (No. 140). Why Kansas City moved down (Jeremy Green, Scouts Inc.): I originally tried to engage Baltimore, but the Ravens said they needed players and couldn't afford to surrender picks. Offensive line is the Chiefs' biggest need and there is no O-line value at No. 5, so it makes sense to trade back and we can still probably get the O-lineman we're targeting. Why New Orleans moved up (Matt Williamson, Scouts Inc.): While we didn't get the guy we originally wanted (Dorsey) when we tried to trade up earlier, we still get one of the top guys on the board. Yes, surrendering next year's No. 1 hurts, but we believe we can make a run this year and getting an elite player improves their status as a playoff contender. So New Orleans is on the clock ....
Matt Williamson: I don't think have a very good year and this is more than a one-season rebuilding process. Picking up picks for next year's draft, espcially No. 1 picks so it will help them in the long run. Kevin (Edison NJ) asks: As a Saints fan giving up next years #1 to me is just a stupid move. They could have stayed put and picked McKelvin or Rivers. Why give up next year's #1? Matt Williamson: Comes back to defensive tackles. Game-changing DTs are different than everyone else. Outside of QB harder to find game changers like this. If Ellis lives up to expectations, the secondary benfits, the linebackers benefit and the other D-linemen benefit. He's one of the few players who can make other 10 player around him better. Rivers good prospect, but not a game-changer like Ellis, plus they added some proven playmakers already at LB in Morgan and Vilma. Ellis is a special player and yes, it was costly, but ultimately will be worth the price. Kansas City is back on the clock ... J.T. (Columbia, MO) says: The Chiefs should now take Brandon Albert, who Kiper has us taking at #5. Even if he busts as a LT, he's still the best guard in the draft.
Just what they have us going- if we are going after this guy, at least we got to move back and pick up a 1st rounder for next year....
