Babb:Chiefs buzz: Albert injures elbow

Chiefs buzz: Albert injures elbow

Albert injures elbow

Rookie left tackle Branden Albert was carted off the field late in the second quarter Sunday because of a hyperextended right elbow.

Coach Herm Edwards didn’t elaborate on Albert’s condition after the Chiefs’ 33-19 win against Denver, saying that the rookie would be evaluated again today.

“We don’t know where he’s at,” Edwards said.

Second-year tackle Herb Taylor replaced Albert in the lineup Sunday.

Albert, one of the Chiefs’ two first-round picks in last April’s draft, started the first four regular-season games after missing all four preseason games because of a foot sprain. He missed the final week of offseason practice because of an ankle sprain.

Albert’s latest injury happened after Broncos safety Marquand Manuel fell on Albert’s right arm. Albert was examined on the field for a few minutes before being taken away on a cart.

Red-zone defense tightens

Edwards said the Chiefs’ red-zone defense was the key to holding Denver’s explosive offense to a season-low 19 points Sunday.

Kansas City allowed the Broncos, who entered averaging nearly five touchdowns per game, one trip into the end zone. Denver got its yards, 446 of them, but the Chiefs forced the Broncos to rely on kicker Matt Prater’s four field goals. He missed another attempt.

Denver was one for four in red-zone scoring opportunities Sunday.

“Anytime you get in the red zone,” Edwards said, “I’ve felt that favors you because there’s no room in the back of the end zone. The field is cut down. The throws have to be very accurate.

“If you can hold people … to kicking field goals, you’re always in the game.”

Just like old times for Dorsey

Rookie defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey might not win as often in Kansas City as he did in college at LSU, but Sunday offered him a taste of nostalgia.

“You have no idea, man,” he said. “It’s a good feeling.”

During Dorsey’s four college seasons, LSU was 33-9. The Tigers won last year’s BCS championship in Dorsey’s final game.

He said in the locker room Sunday that he kept believing the Chiefs would win sooner rather than later. He said that is part of a mental approach he learned during his college years.

“There’s a lot of people that love us,” Dorsey said, “and even though we’re doing bad — were doing bad — you can’t give up hope. You’ve got to come out and work hard every day, and hopefully it’ll turn around.”

A short-handed interception

When Chiefs rookie Brandon Carr intercepted a pass by Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler in the third quarter, Kansas City’s defense had 10 players on the field.

Cutler missed tight end Tony Scheffler, who was open in the middle of the field, and instead tried to force his pass to Brandon Marshall. Cutler underthrew the pass, and Carr was there.

Carr also recovered a fumble in the first quarter, bringing the Chiefs’ rookie cornerbacks’ turnover count to three. Brandon Flowers recovered a fumble in the second quarter.

“We just wanted to prove to everybody: We’re not rookies on the field,” Flowers said. “We want to be known as playmakers.”

Flowers misses touchdown

Flowers was 2 yards shy of his first touchdown when tight end Daniel Graham chased him down after intercepting a pass by Cutler.

“I was out of gas,” Flowers said with a smile. “I’m going to be honest. I tried to give it all the gas I had, but the guy just jumped on my back.”

The Chiefs did take advantage of Flowers’ interception, scoring two plays later when Larry Johnson ran into the end zone.

No Oscar nomination for Williams

Linebacker Demorrio Williams showed his acting chops Sunday by flopping to the turf after Cutler pushed him late in the fourth quarter.

Williams admitted he was trying to draw a personal-foul penalty, but no flag was thrown.

“It was a big fake,” he said, “but it happens sometimes. Sometimes the ref throws it, and today he didn’t throw it.”

Williams had been trash-talking Cutler throughout the game, one time following Cutler back toward the huddle after a bad pass.

Gonzalez nears another record

Tony Gonzalez came within 2 yards of tying Shannon Sharpe’s record for most career receiving yards among tight ends. Gonzalez had three catches for 47 yards and a touchdown. Sharpe’s record is 10,060 yards receiving.

This and that

•Broncos kicker Matt Prater’s 56-yard field goal tied Sebastian Janikowski’s kick earlier this year as the longest ever at Arrowhead Stadium.

•Linebacker Donnie Edwards’ streak of 156 consecutive game appearances was snapped when he sat out Sunday’s game because of an ankle injury. The last time he’d missed a game was in October 1998.

•The Chiefs released receiver Marques Hagans, two weeks after he lined up at quarterback and one week after playing receiver. Hagans was let go so that the team could promote linebacker Weston Dacus from the practice squad.

Hyperextended is a hellava lot better than dislocated.

Hopefully he can just play with a brace the rest of the season and be good to go from there.
