The ultimate hindsight...

alright, all you 'true fans' and all you fans of franchise QBs UNITE...

let's take a trip back into memory lane. it's the 1989 nfl draft. the chiefs have the number four overall pick. but, let's alternate history.

***BREAKING NEWS***the cowboys surprise everybody, and select tony mandarich! this sets off a chain reaction to where the packers select barry sanders, and lions select deion sanders (I know, that order wouldn't have happened... probably. but play along).

you're carl pet...errr... a competant GM. you're sitting on possibly the best edgerusher in history (all respect to LT and a few other great OLB passrushers) and a franchise QB. who do you take?

look, DT was the face of the franchise. he was possibly the best kc chief of alltime (an endless debate). for all he did, though, we never won a super bowl with him.

so, who is the pick? it's urgent, as the time machine is primed and ready to go. if this goes right, I'll get back and we'll have three lombardi trophies in the trophy case at one arrowhead drive

Troy Aikman, no question.

Just look at our QBs during DT's playing time.

1. Steve DeBerg
2. Dave Kreig
3. Joe Montana (washed up version)
4. Steve Bono
5. Elvis Grbac
6. Rich Gannon

Not an impressive cast. With Aikman, we actually may win a SB by bypassing Buffalo in '93.

Not only that, but Aikman would have kicked the underachieving '94 team in the ass. Who knows, maybe another SB?

Aikman would have definitely led the '95 team to a SB.

Aikman would probably have led the '97 to a SB.

The possibilities are endless.

Plus, the Cowboys taking Roiderich is not that far off. I think Jimmy Johnson, himself, said that there was some on the Cowboys staff that were Roiderich fans to the ends of the earth.

HATE to say it, but we probably would have won SB with Troy. We had a damn good pass rusher in NS.

See, that's the variable. We don't know. Maybe, the defenses of those teams are not as strong in our timeline. However, maybe the offense is much more potent and maybe that is the key ingredient to Marty getting a possible four SB wins out of this scenario.

logically rethinking it:

1) cowboys=mandarich. we now know he was a monumental bust, BUT... apparently it wasn't such a longshot.
2) packers... had don majkowski at QB, so aikman was unlikely to say the least.
3) lions... may have taken aikman with barry sanders being off the board. maybe they're intrigued by that fast corner out of florida state? hmmm. they picked andre ware seventh overall in 1990. so, aikman likely goes here in hindsight. maybe we swap picks and get aikman anyway (in fantasy hindsight land)

Troy always delivered. People forget just how accurate he was. He was definitely special.

But DT changed games. When the defense was on the field at the end of the game, ahead or behind, he made the play to seal the deal.

SACK + STRIP.

When it had to happen on defense it ALWAYS did in the 90's.

DT was why.

Without Aikman the Cowboys probably only win 1 super bowl. They aren't a dynasty.

Without DT the Chiefs aren't even a memorable blip in the 90's...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Ditto.
The things that kept the Chiefs out of the SB had nothing to do with the QB play.
Cowboys with Irving and Emmit could have made it to at least one with a competent QB. Which Troy was slightly above.

I'd argue different.

I'd say QB play and gametime HC decisions are the only reasons guys like Shields aren't flashing 4 rings of bling...
