Receiver Recomendations

I inherited a surround sound system from my uncle after he passed this winter (Chiefs season ticket holder for 8 years) and I am looking to upgrade the receiver and wanted some recomendations. I don't have many components, just need to hook up satelite box, 360, and PS3 to my tv. I'm looking for HDMI switching, although it doesn't need to be 1080p (my tv only has 720p). Any suggestions (models, brands, places to buy from) are appreciated.

Denon and Yamaha are two top brands. You get what you pay for when it comes to receivers IMO, so be prepared.

Heh, reminds me of my brother's advice on buying a TV. Just got my stimulus check today.

I've got a roomie who i think (kinda hope, actually) might be moving out soon. So, I was telling my bro, I want a big screen, that'll be nice in the living room, should he go and take his TV with him. But for now, it's gonna be in my bedroom. I've got my eye on a nice Sharp 42", but thought it might be too big for a bedroom.

His advice, "Buy the biggest, nicest one you can afford. You won't be sorry"

I just bought a Samsung LNa450. 40 inches is plenty big enough for my living room, but I don't think it would be too big for a bedroom either. My only advice is to go to an electronics store to look, even if you end up buying at a Best Buy. I went with a 720p, saving $500 over the Samsung 40' 1080p, because quite frankly there was hardly any difference. The tvs were sitting right next to each other, same settings, same show, no difference. 1080p is overated at least on tvs 40' or smaller.

Here's what I went w/. It's not the most expensive unit, but I'm pretty happy w/ my Onkyo unit. Of course if you can afford better. Go for it. But the Onkyo stuff is a pretty good bang for your buck.

I've heard Denon is supposed to be the best...Anyone have experience with those? Is the sound quality worth the price difference?

I went with Harmon Kardon. I bought this unit back in March of this year - awesome clean sound.

The higher end Denon units are nice, but for the price of their lower end receivers, you're better off looking at either Onkyo or HK.

For the same money, you usually get more whistles and bells with Onkyo, but I prefer the clean sound of the HK.

I've had my HK for over a year now, and I never regretted the purchase.
