Berry gets a pick

It was only an intrasquad scrimmage, but rookie safety Eric Berry did what the Chiefs drafted him for, and that’s make a big play. Berry intercepted a pass down the middle after quarterback Brodie Croyle was forced to get rid of the ball because of Derrick Johnson’s pressure.

Berry also broke up a Matt Cassel pass intended for Tony Moeaki.

“I got something I can build off of,” said Berry, the Chiefs’ first-round draft pick. “Our defense did pretty good today.”

Saturday’s scrimmage drew 10,721 fans, a record for Spratt Stadium at Missouri Western State University, despite the warm temperatures. Berry signed autographs afterward for about 20 minutes. He was the last player off the field.

“I love the fans,” he said. “Where would you be without the fans? They came out here and sat in the sun just like us. They came out here and supported us. I believe they set a record today in this stadium. I just wanted to show my appreciation.”

Coaching staff alignment

Offensive coordinator Charlie Weis operated from the press box while his defensive counterpart, Romeo Crennel, was on the sideline.

Coach Todd Haley said that’s also the plan for the regular season, but it could change.

“That’s part of what you get done as a staff through preseason, especially with some new guys involved,” Haley said.

“We’re just trying to figure out the best way to take advantage of all of our coaches.”

Haley was on the sideline when he was offensive coordinator for Arizona before he joined the Chiefs.

But he said the press box is a better place from which to call plays.

“The way I was taught and believe was that the best place to call a game, at least offensively, was the press box, which was a much more sterile, unemotional environment,” he said.

“A much better view, night and day.”

A day off

The Chiefs get their first off day of training camp today. They’ll return to St. Joseph for practice on Monday and begin preparations then for Friday’s preseason opener against the Falcons in Atlanta.

“I want them to first and foremost take care of their bodies,” Haley said. “That would be my No. 1 thing on the agenda. This is a time to rest. That’s what the purpose of a little time off is. They’ve put a lot of wear and tear on their bodies over the last week and a couple of days. This is an opportunity to rest, take care of their bodies, hydrate, stay off their feet and put them in the best possible position to come back Monday and get back at it and hopefully improve.”

What you need to know about …

The offense
It was a tough day for Dexter McCluster. He fumbled two straight punt returns and wasn’t a factor on offense, though the Chiefs didn’t seem intent on getting him the ball. … Ryan Succop’s strong camp continued. He made field-goal attempts from 38, 43 and 53 yards. … Trainers were working on Moeaki’s leg on the sideline late in the scrimmage, but it’s unclear whether the injury is serious. … Reserve tight end Jake O’Connell made the catch of the day on the scrimmage’s final play, diving in the end zone to catch an 18-yard scoring pass from Croyle. … Offensive lineman Dan Santucci was signed. He played for Weis at Notre Dame and in two games with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2007. The Chiefs waived fullback Tervaris Johnson, who was injured.

The defense
Berry, Wallace Gilberry, Derrick Johnson, Mike Vrabel and Kendrick Lewis were among the defenders making big plays. Gilberry had sacks of Croyle on back to back plays. Johnson smelled out a screen pass for Thomas Jones early in the scrimmage and had the pressure on Croyle to force Berry’s interception. Vrabel also forced a premature throw by Croyle with pressure and held his ground at the point of attack on a running play. Lewis broke up Cassel’s pass for Chris Chambers.

Injury report
Guards Brian Waters and Darryl Harris did not practice. Safety Jarrad Page has yet to sign his contract and is not in camp.

Daily battle
After switching up on Friday, the Chiefs went back to their usual linebacking pairings, Demorrio Williams with Corey Mays and Derrick Johnson with Jovan Belcher. Each pair took a turn with the starting unit. Williams and Mays went first and Johnson and Belcher followed.

Today’s schedule
The Chiefs are off today and will return to practice on Monday.

Was McCluster big on punt/kick returns in college? I imagine Colquitt's spin on his punts had a hand on the muffed punts as well....
