A.J. NOT PLAYING? Top receiver may miss Saturday’s opener

September 1, 2010 by NICK PARKER

Aaron Murray’s official unveiling to Bulldog Nation Saturday could come without his favorite weapon: A.J. Green.

Green’s status for Saturday’s opener is still in question after the NCAA came to town in July to investigate his possible attendance at a party thrown by an agent in South Beach.

Head coach Mark Richt, when asked if he expected Green to play, was still non-committal Wednesday.

Students headed to Sanford Stadium Saturday may have to watch the team play without receiver A.J. Green, who is the subject of an unresolved NCAA investigation into a party thrown by an agent that Green attended.

“You know I can’t talk about that. It’s a good try though,” Richt said. “I just can’t talk. I don’t know the answer to anything, other than I’m not supposed to talk about the situation. And I really don’t know.”

Obviously, Richt doesn’t want to risk playing a potentially ineligible player, so if Georgia does not hear back from the NCAA in time for Saturday’s game, does Green still play?

According to Claude Felton, associate athletic director of Georgia Sports Communication, the answer is still unknown.

“Great question, and I really don’t know the answer,” Felton said in an e-mail. “I’m sure there are a lot of schools thinking about that right now. I think all the schools are hoping that they hear back from the NCAA prior to Saturday.”

When Felton references “all the schools,” he’s referring to Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina, who also have had a player’s attendance at the infamous Miami party put under question. Two of the players in question — South Carolina’s Weslye Saunders and North Carolina’s Marvin Austin — have since been “suspended indefinitely” by their teams and are out for their season openers due to “conduct detrimental to the team,” although their coaches say is not a result of the agent probe.

The NCAA has still yet to rule in all four impending cases.

UNC sacks Marvin Austin for violating rules
By Robbi Pickeral / McClatchy Newspapers

North Carolina defensive tackle Marvin Austin, who has been interviewed as part of the NCAA’s investigation into possible improper benefits provided to players by sports agents, was suspended indefinitely Wednesday for violating team rules and neglecting his responsibilities to the team.

That means the star senior will not travel to Atlanta for UNC’s season-opener against No. 21 LSU in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff on Saturday. And sometime before the 18th-ranked Tar Heels board the team bus at 9:30 a.m. Friday, the school plans to announce who else won’t be making the trip, athletic director Dick Baddour said.

"If we have guys in question, they won’t travel," Baddour said in a telephone interview. "And if that question is eliminated, then we would try to get them down there Saturday."

The Tar Heels are mired in two investigations: the one by the NCAA, which began in early July, and the school’s own probe, announced last Thursday, into whether a former tutor who was employed by the school and by Tar Heels football coach Butch Davis committed academic misconduct while working with football players.

According to ESPN's Joe Schad via Twitter, North Carolina's football team may be without 16 of their players when they open the season against LSU this weekend.

Schad has been updating his Twitter on this story and has already reported that the team may be completely wiped out at running back and that defensive end Robert Quinn is also being investigated for illegal interaction with an agent.
