Late night bullshit: way too early prognostication.

Well I've had a shit weekend. I don't know about you guys.

As a result, I sit here drinking a pretty bad Boulevard Porter and I'll suggest the two names I think are early favorites for Pioli's first selection April 28th.

OLB Akeem Ayers from UCLA, and NT Jerrell Powe from Ole Miss.

Both of these players are from bigtime conferences, both of them play at positions of sore need on this team. And both are high character guys, team captains.

I think, gun to his head, Pioli would select Powe over Ayers. Powe is a more finished product, and he's an extremely rare high-motor NT with a phenomenal attitude. Ayers is still a work in progress and the Belichek tree doesn't seem to go rushing OLB in the first round very often, if at all.

Also, not for nothing, but Pioli's two first rounders so far have been from the SEC.

Top flight WRs are interesting, but I don't think any of them make it to us, and none of them are high on character the way these two guys are.

Thoughts.

I think Cam Newton's going to remind too many teams of a rich man's Josh Freeman as a prospect.

He'll go Top 15.

Ayers would be my selection, but imagine if we did end up picking Powe.

We'd finally get to see what these DEs are made of now that we have a NT that earns two blockers every down.

The only thing Newton and Freeman have in common is their skin tone.

Ayers looking unimpressive against Temple, of all teams.

Have a very Vrabel-like quality to him. Vrabel of 2010.

UCLA plays Ayers as a 4-3 OLB more than they do a passrusher.

He's a project.

A great project. But Pioli was burnt by all the projects in the 2009 draft, so he went with the more failsafe players of the 2010 draft.

Pioli prefers failsafes.

Locker isn't going to fall to us... but if he does, we could do a lot worse.

I have seen nothing in Cam Newton that makes me believe he can be a passer in the NFL.

Maybe he has potential at a running position, though.

Think 1st round is a reach for a NT.

Don't know anything about Ayers. But I'll tell you what, you bring in a legit OLB (like he or Von Hayes) and bring in a Nose Tackle (I think the Chiefs could easily land Aubrayo Franklin) and this defense could be vastly improved by those two moves alone.
