He will be walking away from $12.4 million he was due this season. Meche signed a five-year deal with the Royals in December 2006 and had a 29-39 record with a 4.27 ERA in 111 games. He has struggled with shoulder injuries in the past two seasons, making just 43 appearances. Meche explained his decision in a statement, citing his health issues. "After a lot of thinking and prioritizing of issues in my life, I have decided to retire from baseball. As a competitor my entire life this is the hardest decision that I’ve ever faced, but it’s not fair to me, my family or the Kansas City Royals that I attempt to pitch anymore. "I came into this game as a starting pitcher and unfortunately my health, more accurately, my shoulder, has deteriorated to the point where surgery would be the only option and at this stage of my life I would prefer to call it a career rather than to attempt to pitch in relief for the final year of my contract. "I can’t thank the Kansas City Royals and their fans enough for my four seasons there, and if I have any regret, it’s that we weren’t able to accomplish on the field what the goal was when I signed there.” Read more: http://www.kansascity.com/2011/01/18...#ixzz1BPrVIPgp

mixed feelings ... he would of helped us even in a relief role but he would of been a dam expensive relief pitcher for 11 million or whatever.

I think we can all agree that this lies squarely on the shoulders of the Manager-Who-We-Will-Not-Name, since he pitched Gil's arm straight into oblivion. |

One of these days an agent is going to convince a pitcher to sue an organization for destroying his arm...

I was in Springdale, AR on Sunday traveling back to KC. I wanted to get off the road for a bit to stretch, so I went to the ARVEST Ballpark, the new home for the "Naturals," the KC Royals AA farm club that moved there from Wichita. The stadium is nice and new, looks a lot like the T-Bones stadium. It's out in the middle of a cow pasture. There's no development around it at all. The stadium store was closed (Sunday off season) so I asked around where the nearest Sports Store was. They gave me a place a couple exits up the road, and I went to Academy Sports (it's a lot like Dick's or Nill Bros). They had St. Louis Cardinal Stuff, Dallas Cowboy Stuff, a couple Chiefs items but not much, a couple Texas Rangers things, and a buttload of Arkansas Razorback stuff, but NO Arkansas Naturals stuff. I asked a kid who worked there why they didn't have hats, or T-shirts or bumper stickers or whatever, and he said, "Nobody cares about the Naturals. They're a farm team for the Royals and they SUCK. Everybody here are Cardinal fans, anyway." So, there you go. David Glass can't even make people in his own home town give a crap about KC. Very sad.
