Not my cup of tea. But I know that game will be taking a lot of people away form other existing MMO's.

No prob, it's all gravy. Actually I'm excited someone else posted about this. I've hyped this up until my fingers bled.

As I told you, if you're grabbing the game, my friends are already recruiting members for the our guild/legion. We'd like to build up a good member list so someone's always on to join up with.

There sure are a lot of F2P online RPGs coming down the pipeline

I hope this is a trend, without the bad Pay 2 Win shit. Monthly fees is such a dinosaur.

buying the game and then paying a monthly is such double dip POS ... i hate it.

Then they withhold content so they can charge you for DLC's too.

Actually, I think it’s quite the opposite. F2P eventually becomes Pay to Win. A monthly fee is not an issue for me. Think about it, $15 a month for unlimited access to ALL of the content. That is $0.50/day. Chances are you pay more for that with your cable/satelite bill, and with this at least your interacting with something rather than staring blankly at a screen.

With that $15, you get constant patches and content updates. There is no DLC that you have to pay extra for. Unless you're thinking of when they release an expansion pack, but that is generally an entire new game built on top of what you're already playing, and even most single player xpac cost you.

In F2P, the standard is do what you want for free, as long as you stay in this tiny little box, but if you want to fight that dragon, $5.00 please, you want that sword, $3.00 please, oh you want to play that class $10.00 please. If you would have paid the monthly, you would get all that included in the monthly cost, but instead, a lot of people end up spending way more than what would have been a nominal monthly fee.

If you don't believe me, look at Korea, where the F2P model comes from, they blow about $500 a month to play.

Laz, your line of thinking comes from people who play either single player games or multi-player FPS's, which are completely different than an MMO. You can't use that same logic. I for one hope that F2P dies in the U.S. because if it becomes the mainstream, I will have to give up a genre that I truly enjoy.

$15/mo is really not very much at all. That's like 2 lunches. It's the most bang for you buck when it comes to entertainment, IMO. Of course, the game style is not for everyone, so if that's the case, you obviously shouldn't be subscribing.

My experiences with ftp have been a bad combination of a poor playerbases (people generally tend to be more prone to behave themselves when they're paying a sub - f2p in my experience means a higher number of douches and spammers), the proclivity of people paying and/or hacking to win and the games themselves just don't offer all that much to do. There has yet to be a ftp game where I haven't lost interest in a matter of weeks (and in fact I think there are actually a group of people out there who just bounce from ftp game to ftp game). For me, I'll gladly shell out 15/month, if we're talking about a huge game that consistently provides new content without an additional charge, a game that I can play for years at a time. And I'll gladly pay for an annual or biannual expansion in addition to the monthly fee, if, again, it adds an enormous amount of new content to the game. And like Pants said, we're talking about 15 here. That's like the equivalent of going out to eat once.

I'm not saying anybody's right or wrong, or making some kind of dismissive statement about GW2 just passing on my perspective based on my experience, which includes the original guild wars, vindictus, DCO and LotRO.

LotRO in particular colors my opinion on f2p I think, because going f2p really ruined that game for me. I get the financial side of it, and how it's been beneficial to them, but the game now is not what the game was in 2008, and that's why I'm no longer playing it, even though I have a lifetime subscription and could log back in at any time. Basically they took the focus away from expanding the game world, and instead made it all about the f2p store. And they basically ran off a fairly sizeable portion of their original playerbase doing it. But it got them a new playerbase, so it's not all bad. For them, at least.

(As far as being a rich guy, actually the 15 sub is perfect for someone like me who's dirt poor; can't really get that amount of entertainment anywhere else for that price - if the game is worth paying for...)

Talking about Guild Wars 2 in particular, I don't know anything about it, but I hope it's fantastic and people get exactly what they're looking for. I'm burned out on fantasy games in general, and did not like the first one, so it's not something I ever expect to play, but that doesn't mean it can't be great for other people. I just wanted to add a voice to the whole 'f2p > subscription' discussion, because I think there are some benefits to subs, IF the game provides you value for your money.

Definitely buying this one when it comes out.
Besides the no monthly subscription fee, its geared towards PvP, which is what I enjoy the most....

SHould be fun.
