RIP: Kitty Wells

Not the biggest name in recent memory, but an indelible part of classic Country and Western. Labeled 'Queen of Country Music.' Dead at 92 from complications following a stroke.

Also, seen at around age 7-8, one of the first concerts I ever attended of any note at all. At the old KC Opry.

It's funny how that twangy style of country held sway for so many years. It still persists today, but it's no longer prevalent as far as I know. But back then, it seems like every country song had the same tune.

Not sure what you mean by 'back then,' but when the song in the OP hit #1 in 1952, it was the first female solo artist of any stripe to hit #1 on the country charts.

She did set the template for what a female C&W artist sounded and looked like, though.

More directly to your point, I disagree that classic C&W was any more or less homogeneous than any other major genre, unless you widen your scope really really wide [like all music that falls under the 'pop' umbrella].
