my pc is cursed...

hi guys, new problem with my pc... it's been hanging up a lot lately and when i tried to boot from the windows setup cd it won't do it... i blew the dirt out and when i first started it, it showed the first screen where it says windows setup at the top but then it wouldn't do anything (hung up again?). now when i try to boot, the pc comes on but no beeps at all and no boot from the cd... the light on the cd flashes but it doesn't boot from the set up disk and now it won't start at all from the cd or from the boot drive C: .. i was trying to reinstall to get rid of the hangups, but now i can't even get it to boot up... aaaaaaargggghhhhhhh! i'm cursed!! (and no, don't tell me to get a new pc, can't afford it)...

1. Hit delete button when you're booting up and see if it will go into bios screen
(might be a different button than delete, it usually says along the bottom when booting)

2. if that doesn't work(turn off computer completely, flip main power switch on back) then crack it open and unplug/disconnect main hard drive.

boot up and see if computer will start up and go to cursor

you are trying to figure out whether it's hardware or software

If computer boots to cursor or runs bios without windows screwing crap up then it's 'probably' either the hard drive or windows installation.

3. remove your hard drive and try putting it into another computer to see if it runs ok on that computer(friends computer?) and/or put friends hard drive into your computer to see if it boots?

This should let you know whether it's your hard drive/windows or another part of your computer.

If ... your hard drive won't run on either computer then format and reinstall windows fresh or you might have to buy a new hard drive.

If ... your hard drive runs fine on other computer then you are looking at a hardware problem of some kind.

other hardware problems
5. start with memtest program to test your memory
then graphics card
then power supply

if it's not one of these things then your screwed because it's probably motherboard related.

at the present, it starts the fans but never beeps and after a few moments it shuts off again... no access to bios, nothing... it's at my bil's house now he's going to reseat the heatsink and see if it will start then... last time i had this, one or two computers ago, reseating the heatsink actually solved the probelm... if the reseat doesn't do it, i will d/c the hdd and try it, and follow your suggestions to narrow it down... thanks for responding, you guys are always a gold mine when it comes to these newfangled compooters...

if it won't even get to bios then it's a hardware or clocking problem.

unhook/unplug hard drive completely (will eliminate Hard drive from equation)
reseat heat sink
reseat memory sticks
If you have multiple memory sticks then remove 1 and try to boot, then switch to other one.

also:

1. remove battery on mobo (looks like watch battery)
2. hit the bios reset button which is right by battery ... might also be reset 'jumper'

this will reset the clocking speed and memory speed back to normal

memory the most likely problem
power supply the 2nd most likely
motherboard next(most difficult)

was the heatsink problem and a bad video card...

reseated the heatsink and pulled the vid card and now using onboard video...

i don't much like the onboard video but it's much better than no pc at all...

and much cheaper than a new graphics card...

thanks for the help with this guys...

until we meet again...

happy trails here...

probably doubtful on the heat sink. bad video card can definitely make weird stuff happen. hopefully the video card slot itself isn't bad.

Yeah, a bad heatsink wouldn't show up immediately...you'd just start overheating really quickly. That wouldn't prevent a boot though.
