A Strange Story About Karma
No, not Karma Electra ... Karma; the Buddhist theory of infinite justice, cyclical recompense, and fateful remuneration in one's life.

I went to a party last night. It was one of those "Dirty Santa" parties where people give gifts they steal back. One of the people there was a young man (about 20) whom I have known for about 7 or 8 years or so. When he was around 13, he and I were part of a large group attending a funeral for one of the beautiful and witty Mrs. FAX's relatives and happened to sit next to each other. As the proceedings unfolded, the boy kept looking at my watch ... a cheap, digital watch with a flip-up calculator thing and a tiny pen-light shooter thing and various other buttons for the alarm and stuff. Anyhow, I noticed he was fascinated by the device, so I took it off and gave it to him.

So now it's 7 years later and I run into him at this gathering. About an hour into the party I heard some people talking about how he had run out for a brief while but was coming back. Later that night, I left the Dirty Santa deal in order to find my bag because I needed supplies and he followed me downstairs. Then, he stopped me and handed me a guitar case that held a D-28 Marquis Martin Acoustic Guitar and said, "Merry Christmas".

Needless to say, I said, "What the hell are you doing, man? You're freaking me out." and he said, "It's yours. Merry Christmas." This pattern of refusal and retaliatory stubborn good wishes continued for some time until I finally gave up and accepted his gift out of nowhere.

Anyhow, it turns out that he has always remembered that watch (it really was just a cheap, funky thing) and had purchased this guitar but never played it much and has since lost interest. Rather than sell it or whatever, he decided to give it to me in remembrance of that unexpected gift he had received 7 or 8 years earlier. Needless to say, I was more dumbfounded than usual and still a little taken aback.

Crazy huh?

Have you checked to make sure there's not a pound of coke smuggled inside the guitar? Maybe he went outside to make a delivery...but then saw some cops and panicked and decided to dump the coke rather than risk getting caught with it?

I was (and still kinda am) a little shocked, to be honest.

The guy (the 20 year-old) has been reasonably successful in the film business as an editor, but this is a pretty extravagant gift ... particularly considering the fact that we rarely see each other.

No. Didn't check it for contraband but that would never happen with this guy so I feel reasonably secure. It does play very, very well, though. Sounds like an orchestra. And I ain't giving it back.

I am a definite believer in Karma although as you just stated Karma is brought on by an act undertaken by an individual which results in a separate act at a random time and place. There is good Karma and Bad Karma so it is best to do as you did by giving the young man the watch and living life treating people as you would like to be treated. Random acts of kindness are good for the soul anyway.

Now I must go to walmart and buy a pocket full of watches before going to work and firing two employees because I suspect they are lesbians.
