Late night bullshit: PFF on the Texans

1. Houston has an atrocious RT. Derek Newton has allowed 22 QB pressures and 5 sacks. That's worse than Fisher. Derek Newton is the worst RT in football. He also has allowed 10 penalties.

2. Chris Myers is a really, really good center. In fact, he's the highest rated C. I'm guessing Poe struggles this week. We may give up a few rushing yards.

3. The Texans defense is a complete dumpster fire. It's JJ Watt and a bunch of guys who are really struggling, for the most part.

4. Brooks Reed is one of those guys. He has just 1 sack and 10 QBP. Their other OLB, Mercilus, is doing OK, but nothing spectacular. I think we double Watt and Alex should be OK.

5. I don't like Alex against their CBs. One is Jonathan Joseph, the other has only allowed 90 yards this season. Don't worry about Ed Reed, though. He hasn't gotten his hands on a single pass this year. No picks, no deflections.

6. Earl Mitchell is their starting nose tackle. He has the 2nd lowest run defense rating out of anyone on the DT/NT list. I'm thinking we can run the ball this week.

7. Houston is the 2nd worst pass blocking team in the NFL.

Good. A true test for Poe. I hope he make Myers his bitch. That would really show something.

I reckon Sutton will be overloading the right side of their Oline with the blitz quite a bit.

Brown Bag Special:

Sack Lunch for the entire Chief's Defense. Gotta feel bad for Fig Newton and company having to try to block a swarm of elite rushers while their rookie QB in his 1st start stands back there making yellow down the side of his leg as he's devoured by a sea of red crashing down from all angles.

Houston has the #2 Defense in yards allowed yet they are 29th in points allowed. How does that happen ?

pick 6's my friend. No yards gained for the opposing offense, and 6 points on the board. That's why I hate the yards allowed/gained stat. It can be very misleading.

They are also very efficient at racking up stupid penalties. Kareem Jackson is the king of dumb penalties, so he should be targeted often.

Ya, it baffles me that a lot of the ratings for defensive rankings use yards per game as the determinant stat for ranking a team's defense 1 through 32. Unless it's changed, even NFL.COM sorts the ranking that way or did for a long time.

Just as stupid as adjusting offensive points per game averaged by including defensive touchdowns, or punt and kick returns. Field goals I would attribute to the offense, but the others simply skew point production if your really looking at the offensive units production.

I think points per/against is a much better way to establish who is kicking who's ass. Calling a defense or offense #1 because of how many yards gained/allowed is misleading.

I am fine with them putting the defensive points on the board, because the team is still scoring that many points/game. Just like every other stat, it needs to be taken in context.

Myers is a traditional zone-blocking center, and as such he's very undersized, actually plays under 300 so Poe has what a 40 or 50
pound advantage ?

Of all the reasons to dislike measuring defense by yards allowed, it doesn't seem like the impact of pick 6s should be one.

Yep...the intro to that statement seemed to be leading up to something else entirely.

How so? If team A throws a pick six to team B, does that not: A) Jack up the A's points allowed and B) decrease the amount of yards given up by team A's defense? It a misleading way to represent a team's defense. They don't give up that many yards because the offense is putting the defense in a position where there are few yards to give up.

Maybe I should have said that's one reason I don't like. . .

If anything, your statements leads to the conclusion that points allowed is misleading.
