So, which is it? QB or RB?
One could say that these NFL conference championship games being played today are a microcosm of the debate that has raged on here on the Chiefs Planet for years, i.e., do you need a "franchise QB" to win the Super Bowl or not?

While the AFC features two of the most respected and accomplished quarterbacks to have ever played the game of football in Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, with each signal caller putting up record passing numbers in recent seasons, the NFC championship game has two of the worst passing offenses in the entire NFL in 2013 (the 49er's are at #26 and the Seahawks are #30).

Nothing can illustrate this more than Seattle's QB Russell Wilson's stat line in the game against the New Orleans Saints: 9 for 18, 103 yards and zero touchdowns, but the Seahawks handed the high powered, Drew Brees led offense (who threw for 309 yards and a TD) a loss to advance to the NFC championship game against the equally non-pass oriented San Francisco 49ers (whose QB, Colin Kaepernick, threw for only 196 yards in their victory against the Carolina Panthers).

And is this low passing yardage trend even affecting the former passing leaders, as Tom Brady only threw for 198 yards in their victory against Andrew Luck and the Colts, where, in a loss, luck tossed for 331 yards?

So, what's the deal? For years, we've heard the "Franchise QB" mantra around here, with people screaming for a quarterback that will consistently go down field as the only way for the Chiefs to win in the playoffs. But yet, at least in the NFC, this is obviously not the case.

Perhaps we'll just have to wait and see which concept comes away with the top prize. However, at least today, I'd be curious to hear from those people (and you know who you are) who lamblasted the trade for Alex Smith, stating that a modern NFL team could never win in the playoffs and reach the Super Bowl with a game managing type of quarterback/system, as, most certainly, at least one team that fits that mold will be playing on Super Bowl Sunday.

You need a QB that can make plays.

He doesn't have to throw for 400 or even 300 yards, but he needs to be able to make the big plays more often than not.

Because fans that don't take the time to look at the big picture don't take age into account. At all.

A perfect example is the poll question from a few days ago where fans were asked if they were gonna start an NFL team tomorrow, who is the first player you want to start your team with....like 80% said Peyton Manning.

Reading on twitter today, it seems that Kaep is gonna ask for a contract extension this offseason, somewhere in the range of 18 mil per.

Unless he drastically improves his play from the pocket, if be worrisome to pay that. IMO, a big reason the 9ers and Seahawks are ao dominant is because if the low price they pay their qbs. When that changes, which it seems to be doing now, those qbs are gonna have to carry more f the load as they aren't gonna be able to keep all that talent around them

I think having a QB that can shred defenses is highly overrated.

There is still a lot to be said for a QB who is extremely efficient and is backed by a solid running game and defense. While Brady and Peyton have been very successful in the playoffs, Joe Flacco and Eli Manning have been successful where Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers have largely not in the playoffs. And I think Russell Wilson will keep winning games in the same way Flacco and Eli do.

Yep. Franchise QB's can get you into the playoffs when the entire rest of the team is pretty pedestrian (see Tom Brady). That doesn't mean that you have no chance whatsoever if you don't have a franchise QB, but it's unlikely you'll go on a run of consistently being in the hunt for a decade.

I don't think the debate is between QB or RB.

I feel like the debate is between "established, elite QB you've had to pay $20,000,000/year to keep, and make value acquisitions nearly everywhere else" and "up-and-coming elite QB on rookie contract that you only have to pay nickels on the dollar, allowing you to stack your roster everywhere else."

There's some truth to that, but also some things I really disagree with.

What I like about game managers is that they do things that keep their defenses fresh. I don't like the stigma of saying a game manager is just a conservative checkdown guy. There's a lot to be said for a QB who doesn't have to play hurry up, is nails on third and short, and efficiently marches a team down the field while burning clock.

I don't think Eli and Flacco's struggles are because they got paid too much. It's because their running games largely went to shit. Anyone notice how much better Big Ben played when Laveon Bell finally got healthy?
