Should pro sports have a relegation system?

I had a really interesting conversation with a dude who loves international soccer.

The English Premiere league has what they call a relegation system. The worst three teams every year basically get demoted to a minor league type system. I would love to see baseball use this system. It would be a much more effective system than installing a salary cap, in my opinion. Too many owners are cheapskates because they have no motivation to win. In many cases, you see teams tanking at the end of the year because there's a huge incentive for being the worst team in the league. My buddy said this system forces owners to spend, to care about winning, and to be held accountable for poor results because now they get dinged when their team is terrible.

I know this would never happen because it would be such a culture shock and owners would never agree to it. But what do people think of this idea in American sports?

Fun idea on theory but no.

Baseball needs to contract teams more than they need to allow a system to perpetually cycle in loser franchises on a rotating basis.

Professional Bull Riders has always done this. The top 45 ride in each event. If 41-45 don't move up after a certain number of events, they go back to the lower circuit and a replacement is brought up.

If not relegation, I like the idea of punishing the worst team in the league. Maybe you give that team lesser share of the revenue. I don't know. While people pick on the Yankees and Red Sox for killing baseball, really what's truly killing it is cheap owners who have a $20M payroll and still end up making money. And it prevents an NBA fiasco this year where you have many teams tanking to get the #1 pick halfway through the season.

Why would America follow anything the Brits do? We're the superior nation, they should be copying our ideas. One of them: getting rid of their EPL relegation system.

It is just funny how the American system the NFL has is completely based on socialism and the European way in EPL is about as capitalist as it gets.

There are some great aspects to promotion and relegation but I don't favor it in our country for soccer or any other sports.

I think relegation is far too extreme for us to try out, but I like the idea of punishing teams who fall on the bottom. There has to be more of that. Bad owners need to have some skin in the game.

Relegation is stupid because owners purchase teams based on expected economic profit and nobody would purchase a team for a high price if the NFL could relegate them and murder their income stream. The EPL isn't capitalist, they're a flawed franchisor model.

Each year the worst team in the NFL is awarded with the highest draft pick with the best performing team being the last one to pick from that new pool of talent. There is also a salary cap so nobody can spend that much more than the other guy...don't want the haves getting too much of a leg up on the have nots right?

Yearly bailouts..wealth redistribution...powerful labor unions...it has it all!

Revenue league wide in all kinds of pipelines is shared regardless of performance. The NFL has created it's nice own system of socialism where everyone gets their huge chunk of the pie no matter what happens...and when your team doesn't do well they are lifted up and gifted high draft picks to try and make up for that imbalance.

Meanwhile if you are a weak club in EPL? You get cut from the league. Enjoy the Championship League! If you do bad there as well? Down to league 1 you go! And so on and so on. There is no cap on teams can spend...the rich succeed and thrive...the weak tumble down...

Your world view is being crushed isn't it.

Yea, it is interesting...also no real pyramid system to speak of in football...baseball has a semblance of one with AAA and AA teams.

I agree. I'm tired of owners claiming they don't have a big enough market to spend $'s. Meanwhile, those same owners refuse to open up their books. When you factor in that taxpayers fund the stadiums, in many cases wages are artificially capped, etc... owners are making a killing. Why do you think owners of even terrible teams rarely sell their teams?

People are quick to blame the Yankees and Red Sox. Rather than criticize those teams, maybe we should have more owners who want to spend like the Yankees and Sox.
