Cool Picture My Sister Sent Me

My Sis in St. Louis is big into the genealogy thing. She has us traced back to amoebas basically. Anyway, she was trading pictures with somebody in Buckner, MO, a little town east of Independence, south of Ft. Osage in Jackson County. My dad's side of the family started farming there around the Civil War, and the farm was sold to housing developers in the 1980's. This picture is of the Buckner, MO football team in 1925, in front of the Buckner Bank. My great uncle John and Clarence are in the front row. Clarence is the guy holding a football on the right side of the picture, and John is seated to left of him (right of him as you view the picture).

My Uncle John was a cab driver in Independence for 40 years. He lived in the house across the street from me when I grew up. He went to John Knox Village in the 1980s and passed away at around 90 years old. Clarence lived in Buckner till he died in his 80s.

My grandfather James (my dad's dad) was a left handed pitcher for Buckner's city baseball team. He pitched against the Kansas City Streetcar Company around 1926 and threw a complete game shut out. They offered him a job to come to the big city and pitch for their team. So he left the farm, and became a streetcar conductor - later a bus driver, and worked for the now KC ATA for 50 years. He never had a single driving accident. When he retired from the KC ATA his badge number was "2." "1" belongs to the Mayor of KC. He died in the 1970s.

Back then every little town had a semi pro football and baseball team. These were mostly farm boys playing sports for fun. Many of them didn't go to high school because they had to work on the farm from a young age.

She also had a picture of the Buckner baseball team from around 1926. The guy on the bottom right is my grandfather James, the pitcher. Uncle John is in the center back row. The picture is torn in half because, James had the bottom half of the picture, and John had the top half. My sister found both halves when going through family heirloom stuff. The brothers tore the picture in half, because this was the only copy, and there were no photocopies in 1926. So the each kept the half that had their picture on it.

If it's a high school team the guy in the back middle got held back a lot.

Old-timey football players all look like they could bite nails in two.

That's awesome.

I'm from Independence, and my uncle was mayor of Buckner for awhile in the 90's. I love history, and the closer to me, the cooler I think it is.

Thank you for sharing that photo and the background. That is too cool.

Very nice! It was pretty cool, when my grandfather passed away one of the relatives with a different last name, gave us a picture of my great, great, great grandfather, because he thought it should stay in our family. It also had some records from the civil war for him, yes he was on the side of the north, and a few other things.

That is awesome. I found a rifle and archery medal that you put on your Letterman from Fort Osage. No idea where I got it, I went to Fort O, the funny thing is from remembering its date was before the school was created. Still have it somewhere.
